Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

Are you using crossover RJ45 cables, or standard RJ45 cables with a hub?

If you're running Windows XP it should be very simple, just run the XP Network Setup wizard, and let it find your hardware and configure the network for you. If not, you'll have to do it manually.

As I recall, XP doesn't give you the option to use a USB key instead, however I could be wrong - check to see if it will let you.

If that doesn't work, just run the wizard on the other computer without the disc. It should auto-detect and link up with the other PC.

Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

are you saying i should run the wizard on both comps at the same time?

Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

Run the wizard on the computer that you want to set up as the host - or the computer that connects directly to the Internet through a modem. Select the "This computer connects directly to the Internet" option from the first screen, then follow the menus through. Once the wizard is finished, go to the other computer, run the wizard, but this time select the option "Connect through another PC", and then follow the wizard through again.

Once that is done, restart the computers (host first, then client) and if all is well the connection should be up and running.

wait he has cable connection and it is a modem we have connected to the ethernet hub so which computer is classified as the directly to internet one. since they are both connected to a hub which is connected to the cable modem

Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

So you're using a router (ethernet hub)

In that case, you need to install drivers fro your router before you can use it. If you don't have the discs, look on the manufacturer's website for a driver download.

Whoa, you have the same router as me.

Anyway, I managed to dig up some drivers for you:

Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

Look at the bottom of the page, there should be a "No thanks" option. It's kind of small, the idea being that they don't want you to see it, and instead shell out on some special offer crap. :cort:

Just look around the page for that checkbox. I know there is one, because I'm a member of DriverGuide, and it didn't cost me a thing.

Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

Here is a quick, simple LAN for two people, as that's how many it sounds like you are going to have.

Step one:
Buy a router or switch. Hubs cause packet collisions and are generally not used at LANs.

Step two:
Plug the cable modem into the router.

Step three:
Plug your computers into the router.

Step four:
To play online, open your game, go to multiplayer, select a server that you can both join and proceed to join it.

Step five:
Have fun.

Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

what about the installation of the crap and the network wizard??? it cant be that easy

dysfunctional October 15th, 2005 10:38 PM

Re: How to set up a sloppy lan

There isn't any installation of stuff. As for the Network Setup Wizard, unless you're going to share files you shouldn't have to worry about it.
