because people will pay $2000 for them. If people are willing to pay that extreme amount, Nvidia will let them.

Well if you're serious about 3d rendering and whatnot, you'd need that series of cards. So they figure, why not charge them a premium for it.

Industry-standard cards are often used to stress-test games. Especially high-graphic games like Doom III. They are also often used for extreme resolutions (think 4000x3000) for high-quality projections for presentations and CAD (computer-aided design).

Stuff like Shrek etc, uses those cards, I'm pretty sure they've got more than $2000 to throw around the pan. Imagine having to render a 4000x3000 shrek movie, on a 7800.

When they're going into boxen worth $25,000 and up, $2,000 for a video card isn't all that much...

For these workstation cards your not really paying for the card, but the drivers for the cards, which will recieve just as much development time as the card itself. The drivers for workstation are coded using much more in-depth math for greater color, spatial dimensioning, and ray-tracing accurracy. These drivers will also have there own SDK(software development kit) so that the users can customize the drivers to meet there specific styles when applying certain effects.
