Voodoo 3 3000, NT4, and Quake3 Final

I was unable to get q3 to run without serious graphic distortion under NT4 using a voodoo 3 with the newest drivers. My system is NT4 because I have a dual p3 500, and I use SMP in Quake3. Currently I have a Viper 770 ultra in the box, and It works just fine. After talked to a buddy of mine (who is convinced that the v3 3000 is faster than the ultra) I went out to best buy to snag one and do some benchmarks. However, I never got it to work. Any suggestions for getting the v3 3000 to run Quake3 in NT4? Do the voodoo 3 3k drivers even support SMP?

So far I have tried renaming the 3dfxogl.dll driver to opengl32.dll and putting it in my quake directory, and the wicked driver, but they wouldnt install in nt. I would like to get this to work without the wicked if possible.

Who told you to copy the 3dfxogl.dll file? That's for V2 cards. V3 has a true OpenGL ICD. Make sure you have the latest V3 driver (1.03.04). You want to use the Standard OpenGL setting in the video menu, not the Voodoo 3Dfx setting (that's for V2 cards). Delete any files names 3dfxogl.dll or opengl32.dll from the Q3A folder in order to use the V3's OpenGL ICD.

However, the OpenGL ICD has some problems. It slows down A LOT when you fire rockets.

I highly recommend you download the Metabyte WickedGL miniport. It runs Q3A much faster, and looks better to boot. Get it from wicked3d.com - you have to register to recieve a registration, but it's free.

No way that a V3 will be faster than an ultra in Q3 on your system. Why? The V3 drivers don't support SMP anymore. I believe that enabling SMP will cause it to crash. Put the ultra back in man and use that 2nd CPU!

Got to agree - the TNT2 Ultra is the better card for Q3.

Thanks for the help guys. I decided to stick with the TNT2u, but now I have another question for you all http://www.reviewseek.com/ve/ubbhtml/smile.gif I can't seem to change my brightness in Q3 or UT with the tnt2u. Is this an NT bug or an nvidia driver bug? I can manually change the gamma in quake3 with r_gamma and vid_restart, but no such luck in UT. Someone suggested I use powerstrip.. is this my only option? I realized that in my win98 box (tnt1, sli v2) I can use the command r_ignorehwgamma to enable/disable the q3 brightness bar, but again no such luck in NT4 :
