I'm not that knowledgable (sp?) with power supplies, but I had a similar problem. When I rebuilt my computer, I used the old Compaq power supply and the same thing happened to me. It was a really crappy PSU, so I figured I'd buy a new one, and it worked just fine after that. I would say try upgrading it.
Power supplies are pretty cheap ( here's a 420w for $30) and you could even go to Wal-Mart or Radio Shack to buy one if you need it desparately.
