Odd DVD-R issue.

I recently purchased a new DVD-R drive and plugged it in with my existing DVD-ROM drive. Booted up, no activity lights on either drive during boot, and it stuck on my mobo splash screen. Trays wouldn't open either.

I checked all my connections and jumpers (all possible combinations), but was unable to get into the BIOS to set it all up for some odd reason. I'm thinking it may be my PSU (150 watt) as it was making a strange noise while both were installed and running, but booted up perfectly fine once either one was removed. Freezing at the mobo splash is what threw me for a loop though.

Thoughts? Ideas? Oughta be easy enough to replace whatever.

150 watts? That's most likely your problem. I'm not that knowledgable (sp?) with power supplies, but I had a similar problem. When I rebuilt my computer, I used the old Compaq power supply and the same thing happened to me. It was a really crappy PSU, so I figured I'd buy a new one, and it worked just fine after that. I would say try upgrading it.

Power supplies are pretty cheap (here's a 420w for $30) and you could even go to Wal-Mart or Radio Shack to buy one if you need it desparately.

Hope this helps!

:agreed 150 watts seems very low, but depends what cpu and graphics you have

Yeah, I figured it would have come down to that. It's extremely low. I'm actually surprised it's running my machine (Athlon XP 2200 and a GeforceFX 5900).

But, I'm guessing that'll be my next step. That $30 one would do nicely.

Thanks for the input and the link, guys.

No activity would suggest the cable was plugged in the wrong way, but that's pretty impossible with a master/slave connection from the cable sizes I've seen. Looks like the power supply, as was first mentioned.
