Dell Power Supplys

I was looking around at stuff for my dell pc, and found that for a certian period of time, Dell used non-standard mobos and psu's, they are standard ATX, but run with different voltages, so if you put in a non dell mobo and used the dell power supply you would fry it, and if you used a non dell power supply with a dell mobo you fryed it as well. the thing is i cant find out what time period they used the Dell only parts for, some places say 1990-2000 and another place said 1998-2002. Does anyone have any info on this? Would my Dell Dimension 8300 fall under that? or could i use a non-dell psu?

umm... i honestly cant remember if i got my computer in 2002 or 03 but i have a demension 4600 with 512 megs of ram pentium 4, and 120 gig hard drive
but n e way i put in a dvd burner and a video capture card that i bought with christmas money and they didnt fry, actually they both work perfectly, and if i remember right the 8300's were made a lil after the 4600's so i would think you would be fine, but why dont you just call tech support? i know they're jerks sometimes and some have really bad accents that are hard to understand, but if you get a jerk or w/e just hang up, and call back, they should be able to help you (and dont think they'll give you a hard time about openeing your computer because i had them help me when my capture card wasn't working)

from what i've found its the motherboard / power supply connection that is not standard voltage. so they make you use a Dell mobo and a Dell psu, or they both have to be none Dell, you can't mix them. things like dvd drives and cards arn't the issue. I would like to upgrade the psu on my 8300 sometime from the crappy 250W they give you with it but this issue concerns me....

o lol i misread what you were asking, i thought u ment you couldnt put n e thing non dell in, i didnt realize u were talking specificly about the mobo.
well wat i said before still applies, call tech support, i mean wats the worst thats gona happen? they yell at you for putting in a new mobo? its called hanging up
and if you cant get an answer out of them you could just get another power supply, heres a link to one i personally would LOVE to get

problem of coarse is you have to replace both of the things you said would fry with a new power supply not just one or the other

Get a new Powersupply they are cheep..... $20-$25 on newegg

that is why i gave two links to power supplies in my previous post, one 80 dollar one that kiks ass! it looks great, functional and you dont have more wires floating around in your computer then you need, or the 25 dollar one that is pretty good, but obviously you get wat you pay for

I just want to replace my power supply though, not the mobo. I also seen something else about certian dell models that the case needed to be modded for a non dell psu. But i just found a site that sells ATX to Dell converters to turn a standard psu into a dell one so that might be an option.

anyone have any other info about this?
