Updating video card...

Hello People,

I have a question,
it's about time I updated my videocard, from the ultra slow geforce Fx 5200 128MB/64bit, to the next step up, for my budget I've been looking at a Radeon R9550 CDT 256Mb/128bit, or a Geforce FX 5500 256Mb/128bit, i've been to both product's sites and they pretty much look the same, can anyone offer some sage-like advice, which is the better performer?

as this weekend i'm hopefully going to be buying another 512Mb DDR Ram and a videocard. can anyone guide me in which card would be better for my system?

Thanks

Itto

Current System:

Intel P4 3.0ghz HT
is7-e2 Mobo
512Mb DDR Ram
120Gb Seagate Hdd
CDR-RW
500w psu
Win Xp Home Ed
Geforce Fx 5200 128Mb/64bit

Re: Updating video card...

Do you have some more cash?

If so then get a 9800pro for a 9600pro.

Get this 9600pro 256mb only $120 The 9550 is old and slow for todays games.
If you can only get one of the 2, get the 9550 then.

Just go out and buy one at a local computer store or at Comp USA.

Thanks Pethegreat,

Re: Updating video card...

ok,
thanks Vash2000,

Down here in Oz, Radeon 9600 XT 128Mb/128bit is roughly $340 from Winner Computers

Do you know the difference between SE, XT, and LE after card names?

Pethegreat March 3rd, 2005 02:50 PM

Re: Updating video card...

Se- crap

Xt-the fastest/most expensive

LE- better than se but still crap.

The 9600pro i showed would be around $150AU Don't buy the $300 one your getting scammed badly.

Look for a site that ships worldwide since newegg does not.

You will be paying topdollar for it though:p.

Also, what kind of games do you like to play? If you like Half life 2 and doom 3 then go for a 9800pro or an x800 insted. But if you like older games then the 9600pro/Xt will be fine.

Yeah i know what you mean about the Geforce 5200, i have one and i am starting to hate it. and like pethegreat said, i would get a 9800Pro or a X800 if you want to play the newer games well.

Re: Updating video card...

Thanks RemanWarbird,

buying the Geforce Fx 5200 was a very big mistake...lol well some of us have to learn the hard way, myself included...

but I'm leaning towards the Radeon 9600Pro, if I can find it the same price as the site listed before ($119)
thank's all for the sage-like advice... todays tech has pretty much left me behind. ah for the good old days when the 686 was king...lol

Winner Computer, Newcastle...

http://www.winnercomputers.com.au/

I have just read in another forum a radeon 9550 can be flashed to work at a 9600 speed...

http://forums.guru3d.com//showthread...hreadid=126130

it's sounds strange, would anyone know how to flash a card like that?

Re: Updating video card...

$340!!!! jesus christ you pay alot. $340 is the price for a 9800 pro down in Victoria (mmm hooray for having more pc enthusiast asian minorities down here :P)

p.s. You will save money in the long run buying a more expensive card like a 9800 Pro, you won't need to upgrade as soon and you'll get way more bang for buck.

And for games, get half-life 2, call of duty, BF1942 (Forgotten hope mod is nice), hitman 2 and contracts.

hey itto, go onto www.ebuyer.com and check out some graphics cards, nice and cheap at ebuyer too

Itto March 4th, 2005 02:01 PM

Re: Updating video card...

Thanks Eagle One,
checked out that site, it's mostly for Brit's and Amercian's, the postage to Australia alone would probably make them the same price.

Thanks Rahman,
I already going to be doing that, but thanks anyway...

Re: Updating video card...

Hope you can find a good card:D

Now for some games you wanted:
Half Life2
An act of war:direct action(the C&C killer)
Call of Duty
Far cry.
Halo PC

For halo and far cry you would need a 9800 pro or better to run it with all the goodies:D

On that thread they said a gecube 9550 is a good card...

Hey Yellowhampster
Thanks for the address, checked it out and it's cool.

this weekend I'm going to try to put a fan on geforce FX 5200, had a look and it was built to fit one if i remove the massive heatsink aready on it... going to try to put a blue orb active fan on the card...

on my other thread, it was suggested to me by Posifossy, but hey it's worth a look... wish me luck..

I don't even own doom 3. I tried a demo of it on my old 9000pro and it was ok. I got my 9600pro and have not tried doom 3 on it:lookaround:. Half life 2 is fine on it as well as CS:S and C&C ZH

Since you are not play alot of high end games the powercolor 9600pro 256mb should be fine.

In a few months of years the AGP X800's will come down in price to the point you can get one for $150http://forums.filefront.com/images/smilies/smilie.gif.

Re: Updating video card...

I have an ATI 9550 256mb. Its pretty good, plays MOHAA and UT2003 great with graphics as high as possible.

But i tryed to play a painkiller demo, and it couldnt handle it (although UT2003 has way more textured graphics...strange).

But its a great budget buy!
