Need XP for this?

I am looking to get a new motherboard with a processer, the exact make and model is a Chaintech V915P Socket 755 ATX motherboard and intel pentium 4 505 2.66 Ghz processor. My biggest consern is right now I am running Windows 2000 Pro. and one of my friends told me that I needed to upgrade to Windows XP in order to make my new motherboard compatible. Is this true, and if so should I go with home or pro edition?

it should work, your OS doesnt have any effect on a mobo that i know of.....i know people that have a brand new mobo and cpu that are running Window ME....so it should be ok

it is not true. you could use the motherboard with windows 2000 pro. but if you would like to upgrade to XP, go for pro since it is the equivalent to 2000 pro. while home is the equivalent to 98/ME.

Hahaha, not quite. The OS in no way affects how a motherboard will work. If you have the driver cd from the hardware, you can properly install it on any OS.

Re: Need XP for this?

You may need to download updated drivers for it. Windows 2000/XP drivers. :) Then again, WinXP has been out for while, so you might have to DL them for WindowsXP as well. They do come with driver CDs for Windows 2000/XP, and usually NT4, and Win98/WinMe as well.

That is a terrble comparison. Both PRO and HOME use the same kernel. The only difference in PRO is several admin programs and it also allows for more computers to be networked. Its a license issue, mostly, and you pay for it.

And a few administration features, for added security.

Well, Windows XP isn't as big a drop in quality from Windows XP, as Windows ME was from Windows 2000. I would agree with Gogetenkz, get WinXP Pro, Win2K Pro users will find WinXP Home to be a step backwards, with so many usefull features having been removed.

It's their "New Technology", built off a totally different codebase than DOS. Which is a good thing. I think it was headed by a guy who used to do VAXen and such. Anyway, it's what Windows NT4, 2000 and XP are all based off of. Basically, a much better subsystem. In truth, it's got some very unixy behaviors that they hode from the end user very well.

Other than the above explanation, it is Windows XP itself. The very core of the Operating System.

Windows NT1 through Windows 2000, and Windows XP Pro, are OSes designed for Professional Businesses. Thus they are a much higher quality OS, lacking only gaming support. Until recently anyway, now the "Pro" versions of NT are better for gaming than the "Home" version.

Windows NT 3 used the same interface as Windows 3 but was MUCH more stable.

Here are a few links.

Now let's put everything in perspective here: that's better quality than previous versions of Windows.

Windows itself still picks up the rear of commonly-available operating systems.
