I used to work for Best Buy and was the Computer Department Senior salesperson and was being groomed to take over as department supervisor before I walked out in protest of company policies and my jerk boss.

Those Service Plans are good for some things such as laptops but my Supervisor was almost brutal to the employees in the companies urge to sell them. You were not required to sell service plans to keep your job and supposedly sales performance didnt affect tyour job buts exactly what the situation was.

We were not allowed to lie or do inboarding but everything else was legal.

As for selling used items as new the problesm I had were someone would buy something like a monitor or videocard, return it and we would box it up, shrink wrap it and sell the item as a clearance item with the price marked down. People would say "You are selling a used item as new, its been in someone else's computer!"

"We dont see it that way. The item still has full manufacturers warranty and whatever Best Buy warranties that still apply"

While I was there we fired several people for inboarding (if I say I'll drop the price $50 for you if you will buy this printer with the service plan, thats inboarding and is a violation of US federal law).

I had other employees that would lie through their teeth and to their own mothers if need be and say whatever they thought the customer wanted to hear to get a service plan.

To keep the peace with the customers I would honor the agreement made for the service plan even if it cost the company money to avoid problems and keep customer happy.

My supervisor would not help customers and I saw hip get smacked by a lady once.
