If I have an AMD athlon xp and it says the motherboard is compatible with the AMD athlon 64, will my current processor work with it?

I think you're looking for a socket A. The 64's are socket 754 and more recently 939. Just look on newegg or something for a socket A amd. I personaly have a k7n2 delta running a 2800+ chip. That mobo's pretty decent. It will Probably be an nforce 2 also.

WTF? Someone said Socket 754 and Socket 462, aka socket A, are compatible.

Impossible. Socket 754 CPU's have a on CPU single channel memory controller. The Socket A mobo's have the memory controller in the Northbridge chipset.

Any Nforce, and Nforce2 mobo's are Socket A/Socket 462 compatible.

My experience is Nforce mobo's wont let you overclock but VIA chipsets will.

DFI has a nice MATX mobo for about $79 and it has SATA, USB 2.0, and supports all Socket A mobos's and IIRC supports 400MHz front side bus.
