Torrent question

I was talking with a friend and we were discussing all the different ways possible to send files to each other. Then I came to bittorrents and neither of us had ever created one. My question is, can an FTP be used as a tracker? We were going to experiment by sending a short video clip, but I don't want to waste his time before knowing.

I already know how to create them. I simply wanted to know if you could use something like a FTP as the tracker so you wouldn't have to make it public if you were just shring a file between the two of you.
