What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? I've heard lots of different opinions on graphics cards from nVidia vs. those from ATI, and I wanna know..what are the differences between the cards? Which cards are best for which purposes, such as video, music or gaming? :Puzzled: |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? umm usually a video card has nothing to do with music |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Well you can buy a video card, with sound, but that would totally suck. I always stuck with Nvidia, mainly because it is more reliable for overclocking Ati is cheaper so you would probably want to research this on your own(www.cnet.com) o yea, get ready for the flaming of your life because audio has nothing to do with a VIDEO card. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? I am a huge, HUGE Nvidia fan, but I can even admit that in terms of performance, there is no real differnce between the two companies top-of-the line cards. But from what I hear, currently the ATI card 9800XT just barelys beats out the nvidia 5950 Ultra. But the a margin so small, you would probably, no, almost certainly never see the difference |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? No benefits, just compare performance. There's too many chipsets to generalize. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? lol i know nVidia audio sucks. So basically nVidia tends to be more stable (I've also heard it's better for video recording and editing) but other than that there's very little difference. :uhm: |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? why do u isist on associating video card wit audio? |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Shroom, I belive you're confused....a video card ironicaly displays VIDEO. Are you thinking about the nForce mobo chipset's integrated audio? |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Ya, what Peeping Tom Said. All Nforce mother boards have Nvidia sound cards on the (mostly Integrated i think) I honestly don't know if they are any good or not. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/misc15.jpg I think you guys are a little confused. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? i bet my guinea pig (not sure of spellin) can do that |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? The penalty for spamming is death. Avoid it. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Here is some helpful info. Even if nvidia did make a "soundcard/videoard" do not buy it. First of all i don't know much about ATI so forget my opinion on that. DO NOT BUY AN MX Nvidia card. Simply put, They suck. Definetly go with a Ti or a high level FX with a lot of memory to overclock. Second of all you need alot fans, like a :Censored: load of fans. LIKE 999, then download cool bits and overclock. with your 999 fans you will be able to go on every forum and say, mekimirme gave me this amazing video card idea. and then your monitor will explode and cause it looks so good. I kinda drifted off there. There is some useful info somewhere in there, try to find it. |

And speaking of ATi, I have a 9800 pro right now...will that make Doom 3 look real good at high res., or should I consider getting a 9800 XT? Just a thought. :uhm: |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? 9800 pro will run it just as good as an XT will, for all pratical matters. Even though the XT is better, its not worth going out and spending $400 dollars when you already a really good graphic card |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Here are the differences between ATI and Nvidia cards Quality: Nividia cards tend to display a better image quality then their ATI counterparts yet the difference is little Speed: ATI and Nvidia cards are both realy meant for speed unless you get Nvidia Quadro FX or ATI Fire GL series cards Main Differences: ATI cards you DX9 or Direct 3D video modes, Nvidia cards use OpenGL modes instead. ATI is an American company, Nvidia is a Japanese company. Both cards types are usually good for gaming, digital movie edititing etc. Music has nothing to to with video cards. Music is for sound cards and Nvidia or ATI dont make sound cards. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? There is no use to discuss the performance differences in chipset. That sort of discussion is to technical for us. What you discuss are the different results cards get from benchmarking software such as Aguamark and Pcmark. Keep in mind that these results can be polished if drivers are written to match software. I think the card to get now would be Radeon 9800 XT. Its the nr1 card on benchmarking atm (I think). But more important, ati is working with development of Halflife2. If you buy the 9800xt you get a slip for hl2 with it. ati have access to game content before any other company, therefor the drivers which will be released around the same time the game hits the stores will give maximum performence for hl2 :) For those who dont know, Nvidia altered their drivers to boost results of benchmarkings. They were busted big time.. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Scandal of the week on /. LOL In my experience, ATI has always had shakier drivers than nVidia, but then again i've always been an nVidia zealot since I moved up from my S3Virge card in 1997. Ah, my first computer, how little I miss her..... Oh, and just to tell ya: nVidia is better at OpenGL, but ATI isn't ethe only one to support DX9, nVidiahad it's DX9 compliant cards out a month later than Ati is all..... |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? I know nVidia tends to be more stable than ATI. I started out with a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 and it was SWEET...for awhile lol :frog: . Maybe the 9800 XT is the fastest of all, i dunno. But GeForce FX 5950 Ultra I suspect has silghtly better display quality. I'm also not THAT excited about Half-Life 2, even though I'll get it for sure :nodding: . I think i'll want the FX 5950 Ultra cuz im focused on making my machine run Doom 3 like a charm with high settings. Any opposing opinions?? |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Yes its true Nvidia is a bit more stable, I was Nvidia fan for 3-4 years now, UNTIL I GOT DEUS EX INVISIBLE WAR!!! the performance on my Ti4200 was horrible, then i upgraded to a 9600 XT and BOOM super smooth framerates. If you are going to buy any video card heres my opinion, DO NOT BUY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MX!!!! 2. If you go ATI dont get anything under 9500 PRO, 9600XT is REALLY cheap these days, I would go with that, its wonderful. Ati has "some" issues but they are getting better with new drivers releases. I would go with 9600 XT or 9800XT (if money is there) or no lower than FX 5700 ULTRA... by the way anyone know if my system will be OKAY to run doom 3 or HL 2? specs below. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Don't know about doom 3 but HL2 will run fine. AND i have a FX 5600 with 256 it runs great. Its also great to overclock. Probably one of the best to overclock. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Still im going for the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra since Doom 3 runs best on it. Also I heard that either nVidia or ATI is supposed to come out with a really extravagent 3d card later this year and its gonna cost a grand. Any news on that? :clueless: |

were in the heck did you hear that? |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Talking about PCI Express cards? |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? That's just a faster Bus, not necessarily a faster chipset to go with it, it just ALLOWS faster chipsets..... |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? I'm waiting to see about this PCI express, but I don't know too much about it |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Speaking of PCI Express, im getting an FX 5950 Ultra..should i get the AGP one now or wait for the PCI express version to come? :uhm: |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? I'm still debating if I want to part ways with my GeForce 4 4600 ti to get an FX 5950 Ultra |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? That's just a faster Bus, not necessarily a faster chipset to go with it, it just ALLOWS faster chipsets..... I seem to be repeating myself. Besides, it won't work in your current MOBO. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? ok, I didn't get it before, but I do now. Thank Peeping Tom, for repeating :) |

Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Tom, aye your right. The cards that follow the realease of PCI Express wont have any major chipset differences, atleast not for a couple of months. Personally I belive the 9800xt and 5950 Ultra will be outclassed by express cards within 2004, in a major way. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Quote:
It is also $400, and the GeForce 4 4600 ti isn't exactly a low-end card...see that is what i'm debating |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? So should I just get the FX 5950 Ultra AGP, or wait for a PCI Express version??? |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? As mentioned over, there will be no performance differences between the AGP and the PCI Express version. Besides your mainboard doesent support PCI E. In conclusion, you shouldnt get the PCI E version. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? oh and don't get pci express confused with pcix.. different bus speeds and interfaces altogether. Yes, the next gen vid cards will indeed be pci express cards. Supposed to be released later this year (scuttlebutt is for Q2 2004). And yes, there WILL be a definate difference in performance between pci express and agp. At least the upper end ones anyway. the slowest pci express bus will be roughly the same speed as agp 8x, the next one will be agp 16x, etc.. I seem to recall posting a thread regarding pci express in here somewhere, or posting in a thread about it, along with a link describing it. Glasius, you should have seen it.. and should know there will be a performance difference. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Well im still planning on getting a GeForce FX 5950 Ultra AGP so I hope I won't screw myself there. From all these opinions i dunno what to think...should I just wait and get pci express?? :uhoh: |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? For the last time: There will be NO difference! |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? lol ooooook good. I guess AGP will still be up to date for a long time anyways. :nodding: |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? I wasnt arguing that AGP cards will keep up with PCIE cards in the long run. The current top agp cards will be avaliable in PCIE versions, but without any performance upgrades. Didnt catch your previous post n0e, but I know there are performance differences :) |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Ya, but with all new technology, the prices just keep going up. That is the only downfall to new technology. However, the FX 5950 Ultra will keep gamers happy for a long, long time (Like a year :) ) |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? No, new tech makes prices go down. Just buy the AGP, it will have the same performance as a PCI Express, and mobos made in the next few years will have legacy AGP slots anyways. |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? I'm just saying when things just come out. I remember when a cd-burner cost like $400 bucks. And to the second part of your statement. Ya, just look how long PCI has been around |
Re: What are the differences between nVidia and ATI?? Even with the PCI Express versions coming out, the AGP's will still have the dominant sales for quite awhile and even the top AGP cards (the GeForceFX 5950 & 9800 XT) will be top-notch for AT LEAST a year if not two. |
