Hello everyone, ive recently decided im going to startcollectign a WH:40k army, i already have a fantasy army (orcs and Goblins), but as far as 40k goes i have no idea whats good to start off with.
Im also open to suggestions of what race i should select, right now im pretty impartial, but i want a race that is fairly customisable without alot of repedative units/schemes (excluding tyranids because i think there badass)
I was thinking about tau, but ive never even seen them at my local hobby center any advice relating to basically anything would be appreciated.

Hi' I just started a Imperial Guard army. If I were you I wouldn't get a Iperium army(Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Deamon Hunters and witch hunters) because a lot of thier units look alike.

The thing about the imperial guard is you can pretty make them look like whatever you want through converting. As the IG are drawn from a million worlds they are supposed to be a varried force. You can even go as far as making each individual soldier different.
However, if converting is not your thing. Chaos units look really awesome and they all look different. Also dark eldar look insanely cool and suppobably they are actually decent now where before they just sucked.

Well im enjoy converting and splicing peices, so i think i'll go dig up some info about chaos and dark eldar. thanks for the tip.

Well another ting you can use to chose the army is think the way you like to play, if you like to kill your enemies with your hand chose an army that allows you to do that, for example chaos, dark eldar, orks, or if you don't like that chose and army that fires at the distance, for example eldar, IG, Tau
tau are good in long range, krrot compensate for there cc crapness. imp are the saem, accept they got nuffin that is good in cc (accept ogryin) theyre strenth is there tanks. space marines are good all round but require tactics to win. orks rely on mass and getting into cc. thats all i can say off the top of mi head!
well there aren't a whole lot of wh 40k gamers in my area, so im not sure how much actual playing i would get to do, so a visually pleasing army may be more what im going for.

If you were really into your fluff and chaos i would do some Red Corsairs, there Space marine chapters who turn traitor after the Horus Heresy. So you can make them look like chaos marines but use marine rules, or the other way round.

Recently i was looking at the models for the original 21st chapters and some of them look pretty cool. Can anyone tell me if it's allowed to feild an army soley consisting of units and converted units from long dead chapters (Fire Hawks, Lamenters, ect) because it says that they are generally only used as backup troops, along with other sm chapters.

You are allowed to create your own chapters in WH so you could make a chapter thats the reconstituded verison of the fire hawks for sure if not just remake them completly.
You could call them Fire Avengers or something of the sort for the first option.
