Want to start but How?

DOW the pc game got me hooked on warhammer 40k. I now want to start the table top game, however I know little of it. HELP! What would be the best place to buy the pieces for the game? There is a game workshop near me but WAY too expensive, the best prices i've seen are on http://www.theworldofhobbies.com
Before i start buying, would this be the best place to buy it at? Also i want to start off with the Tau or the SM. Who is actually better?

Re: Want to start but How?

I'm from NY in america, to answer someone's question. I rather not go to ebay or something and buy them for others cuz i don't know if they did a good job of painting them.

I would like to buy new models but now pay retail cuz GW seems to be a total rip off. the web site http://www.theworldofhobbies.com/Sea...?CategoryID=77 is about 20% off of GW. I just want to know if anyone bought stuff from them and whether if there would be a better place to buy 40k models

Re: Want to start but How?

Before you start buying models like crazy youre going to want to decide witch army you want to play. since your intrested in Tau and SM go get there codexes and get together with a friend and play a few games on paper. i started out with nothing more then bits of paper for my first trupes with maps that where writen out with pencel, i went threw almosed 3 difrent races befor i found one i liked ... had i not used paper it would have cost me hundreds just to abanden the army later. when you find a race you like to use then develop a strategy ... you can check online for some good strategies but i went to the games workshop near me and just sat down and talked to the red shirts there. almosed all of them play WH 40k in some fassion and most are more then happy doing shop talk with people. once you got your strategy set up then get yourself a good 200 pt army set up and let it grow and develop from there i started with less then 100 pts of space marines and now ive converted them into nearly a 3000 pt chaos conversion army! just make shure you know what you want befor you get it, so you dont end up with a bunch of models you dont need.

Buy either a basic paint set (which comes with models) or better, the basic rule boxed set.

It comes with two small armies, scenary and rules. Costs about the same as a monoply set, but you'll need paints.

http://www.macragge.com/ for more details.

Re: Want to start but How?

forget buying the codex's, just search limewire, document search, warhammer 40k, you may need to do a few search for more results but that will sort you out, then once you've decided which army you like get the codex if you want.

SM are a popular starting army cuz of their ease to paint (easy to paint but very very difficult to master). But the boxed set for maccarage would be the way to go because you can play game with it straight out of the box almost (rules armies scenery etc).

Re: Want to start but How?

Ye when you start you definatly want the codex for the army you are going for. Space marines, Humanity's Finest, Have very good armour and good shooting capiability. The Tau,tecnelogical advanced, Have Very good shooting possibally the best in the game, the standard troop has a very good gun...

So when you choose your army, you will need to get the codex, when you got that, it is a good idea to get the battleforce, which has the basic stuff i.e some troops, a commander e.t.c. the downfall is that it is £50 but it is cheeper than getting everything by it-self. After you got that you might just want some anti-tank weponary i.e nice big tanks. Then some of the other choices Elites, fast Attack e.t.c

Hope I helped...

Re: Want to start but How?

I would Suggest a simple army like Marines or Tau first cause they are easy to understand, but everyone does marines so be differnt and do Tau.

Re: Want to start but How?

The gamesworkshop would be the best place to buy from, as they will be able to help you with a starter army. And they will tell you the armies backgrounds so you can decide for yourself what you want to get.

Re: Want to start but How?

There really is no place that always sells cheaper, gw sells them to that store, so in order for that store to make a profit for selling it they raise the price a bit. So you will be tough to find any store that is much cheaper. I would reccomend just buying from gw as they will carry the reliable models that you know are not cheap rip offs, and if you have any problems they have a reliable (if somewhat slow) customer service.

Re: Want to start but How?

Thanks, I'll think i'll start with the SM with the Maggascrace kit with the two races. Is that the only start kit?

Well this goes out to all those who are in the US and/or in the NY: The best way the learn to play, i suppose, is with others, other then GW stores which holds touraments, are there any touraments held by others?

Re: Want to start but How?

yeah thats the only starter kit with rules etc. but therer are battle forces that come with a playable force. you usually get a troops selection, a transport and some support or fast attack. therer good.

True enough, but I'd advise to play with other people's aries, to feel what you prefer and avoid unecessary bought...

Re: Want to start but How?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is there an online table top version of the game? Where the same table top rules apply only with the use of internet communcation? I like the paper idea somebody put out.

Re: Want to start but How?

that would be cool, but i dunno.

Re: Want to start but How?

It would probably be possible to do it. If anyone does figure a place where we can do that dont forget to tell me because I havent even a played my first real game and its almost been a year since I started. The best way to start a new army I think is to buy one of the cheaper commanders and only one troops choice then just split them in half and fight against the other half. But you should definately get Battle for Macragge because you get 10 Space Marines, 10 Tyranid gaunts, 6 Tyranid genestealers, 8 Tyranid spore mines, all the dice you'll need for now, measuring sticks, a mini rulebook that has everything that you need, some terrain, the templates you need, and it helps you decide which army you want to collect based on what type you want it to be. Ed Fortune's link will take you straight to the place you need to be if you want it.

There are reference sheets on one of the GW sites that you could use for an army if you just want to see how it plays, but eventually you will need to get the codex. You need a rulebook or a friend that knows how to play to use them though. Tau Empire: http://uk.games-workshop.com/tau/reference/1/ Space Marines:http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/reference/1/
I hope something in there helped.

Re: Want to start but How?

Thanks for everybody's ideas, i think i'll go to the GW store near me cuz they'll teach for free and use their models and maybe i'll choose somebody different then SM or Tau.

However everybody has been recommanding that i buy stuff from GW, but they have the highest prices. Has anybody bought 40K stuff from other stores?

Re: Want to start but How?

Re: Want to start but How?

I forgot about the shops letting you use their models. That works even better. But no I havent bought anything from shops online that sell GW stuff and arent GW. I sent an email asking if I could trust them to send whatever I bought and didnt take my money, but they never replied... So I never buy anywhere else except for ebay and the GW site and the Rouge Traders that are 3 hours away.

Re: Want to start but How?

I think after i learn the ropes, i'll probably buy the models from the online store http://www.theworldofhobbies.com/Sea...?CategoryID=53 , they say they don't charge shipping and is 20% off of GW prices, also i didn't see a bad article on www.ripoffreport.com . If everything is ok and i recieve the models i'll post a new thead saying its safe.

Another site you might want to check out is this one: http://frpgames.irook.com/cart.php?m=product_list&c=774
It has some stuff that the other one doesnt and there are even cases if you want. I looked on that one website and I didnt find any bad reports about it.
