Re: random facts I got some cool stuff on the Legion of the damned, here goes: The Nightmare Legion was the second of the founding space marine chapters. The chapter and it's primarch, Mekratrig, were characterized by stoicism and psychic prowess. In addition to the standard marine training, each recruit underwent a personalized psycho-training regimen designed to locate and confront the fears and traumas learned in the recruit's early life. The Nightmare Legion's armour was painted a dark, swirling gray. The right shoulder pad bore the chapter's insignia, a black skull in flames. The left shoulder pad was individually painted by each marine to represent his former fears. These were displayed in battle to show the legion's implacableness and willingness to conquer any foe, internal or external. This device was as much a factor in the morale in the legion as it was in its enemies. The Legion was the chapter stationed closest to the Eye of Terror and fought often against the growing forces of Chaos. Mekratrig knew that the chapter's proximity to the eye could have an influence among the troops. By instilling a program of knowledge of exactly what they were fighting against, the primarch hoped to annull any influence Chaos would have over the troops. Being close to the eye, the chapter cultivated a relationship with some of the nearby Eldar. Eventually, a few of the chapter leaders were deemed sufficiently pure by the Eldar and admitted to some of the nearest craftworlds and eventually to the Black Library in pursuit of knowledge. Mekratrig had been touched by Chaos as the primarchs had drifted through the warp in their embryonic form. During his entire life, he suffered from chronic nightmares of the horrors of the Chaos realm. It didn't matter whether or not these atrocities of Chaos had been realized, Mekratrig suffered just the same. As the template for his chapter, Mekratrig passed on this trait to his marines. Only the severe regimen of training enabled recruits to cope with the Primarch's gene-seed. Another trait passed on by the Primarch was the ability to see dimly in the future. Nightmare marines would feel the urge to leave their base and seek out crisises as they occurred. Due to exposure to the warp, Mekratrig's ability had been enhanced by the mutable time-stream of Chaos to a superb degree. As the time of the Horus Hersey approached, the marine's nightmares increased their intensity. One night, the primarch and the entire chapter awoke as one with the full realization of what was on the brink of becoming. Mobilizing in a single night, the entire chapter prepared to head to the center of the Empire, to warn and protect the Emperor. However, the Powers of Chaos were waiting for this move. As the fleet headed out from the Nightmare Legion's home base, they encountered a freak warp storm that suddenly appeared to entrap them. The Chaos gods had created this storm to bar the Legion's passage to Earth and cut them off entirely from the Imperium. Mekratrig realized what was happening as the fleet's navigators informed him that there was absolutely no chance of breaking through the warp turbluence ahead. The chapter leaders convened and immediately decided that if they could not get to the Imperium, they would have to take the fight elsewhere. In a lightning move, the fleet burst through the rear of the storm, where the Chaos gods had neglected to reinforce it. At maximum speed, the Nightmare legion flew into the Eye of Terror, to assault the heart of chaos itself. The chapter knew that there would be little chance of survival, but there was time to prepare. As the ships entered the Eye, each marine, navigator and support personell under the guidance of Mekratrig summonned his shadow self, his soul that existed in the warp. In a mass ritual, a bonding took place, that melded for the first time an entity's physical housing to it's spiritual core. Thus prepared, the legion assaulted the daemon worlds. The bonded, prepared marine could destroy demons in their home in the warp. In their righteous anger, the Nightmare Legion carved a swath of destruction across the Eye of Terror and the warp. The Chaos powers could feel their power bleeding away as they brought Horus' rebellion up to full speed. They were forced to turn their attention to the Nightmare Legion before they could do any more damage. The Chaos powers involved themselves more directly and revitalized their minions within the warp. Refreshed, the demons began killing the surviving marines. The Nightmare Legion held for as long as they could, but against such overwhelming forces even Mekratrig was eventually pulled down and killed. The Nightmare Legion was no more, but their goal had been achieved. They had paid the price, but had brought a vital distraction to Chaos. Who knows how many more planets Horus could have brought on to the side of the rebellion. Might he had been successful in the end. Not even the Emperor knows the answers to these questions. A small amount of Mekratrig's gene-seed survived the rebellion. An expedition to the Nightmare Legion's base found the fortress deserted, but the gene-banks were intact. Upon hearing this news during his incarceration in the golden throne, the Emperor ordered the construction of the Grey Knights, the elite daemon-hunters of the imperium, from the lost chapter's gene-seed. None of the chapter's records had survived the assault on the palace, and the Emporer had to become difficult to rouse. The High Lords of Terra had to devise a new way of training elite daemon killers. But that was not the end of the Nightmare Legion. The bonding between body and soul in the warp had created something new. Being slain was a traumatic experience for the soul of any living thing and natural reaction is to flee. The marine's sould had been bonded to the body--it could not leave. Slowly, the sould revitalized the body of the slain marine. Wounds closed, flesh reknit and scattered parts crawled together all while being bathed in the energies of the warp. The result was something not quite human, not quite demonic. The new, undead marine woke and sought out his fellow marines. When realization hit, the Nightmare Legion collectively consigned themselves to an eternity of war, death and unlife. The painted their armour black, decorated it in flames and bone insignia and rechristened themselves The Legion of the Damned. Their fate is to eternally seek out the enemies of the imperium with their preiscience, fall in battle and be reborn in the warp. Some bodies survive long enough to decay naturally. It is customary for each marine to paint a bone on his armour where there is a corressponding wound or peice of decaying flesh on his body. The Legion had become an infamous sight throughout the galaxy, striking and leaving, but their passing always leaves a chill on the bones of witnesses. |
Re: random facts Wow! I'd been looking for the legions history for ages! thanks |
Re: random facts :ditto: Where did you get that information from though? |
Re: random facts Abbadon Rules. The Deciever lead Abbadon to his sword. The Iyanden Eldar Craftworld are few because of an attack by tyranids. They now use their Ancestor's souls for warriors. |

Heosophorus all i had to do to dissmiss all of your post was read the first line 18 primarcs can u name them? Way off on the founding and i could not be stuffed reading the rest. |
Re: random facts The Legion of the Damned are the remnants of the Fire Hawk chapter. The Grey Knights are rumored to have been developed with a unique template of the Emperor's own gene-seed, not that of another space marine chapter. |
Re: random facts the machine god is rumored to be the domant c'tan. void dragon |
Re: random facts hmmm... interusting, and by 'The Deciever lead Abbadon to his sword.' is that the Necrotyr deciver or not? |

Re: random facts So what would happen if he became active properly? |
Re: random facts The most powerful C'tan wakes up in the middle of the Imperium, next to Terra. What the hell do you think would happen? |
Re: random facts Well the if its still in a 'spiritual' form it would annihilate the 'stars' around but not neccerseraly the people. Can someone actually explain, and why is it still there anyway? |
Re: random facts Because it went dormant there, before humans were even thinking about space travel, and nobody has found it. |
Re: random facts o, but how is it the machine god at the same time? |
Re: random facts i dunno but the c'tan arnt spiritul, there solid as they only have power in the matirial world and cannot coprehend the warp(spiritul) world |
Re: random facts The fire hawks were an army of the nighmare legion who managed to escape from the warp and were separated from the main chapter, the renamed themselves but something happened, they contracted a disease that slowly killed them but at the same time made them incredibally stong, i dont kno more than that. |
Re: random facts The Fire Hawks were a Space Marine Chapter created in the 21st cursed founding, can't remember which gene-seed they're based on. THE LEGION OF THE DAMNED (White Dwarf 99) In the year 963 of the current millennium, Space Marine chapter 'Fire Hawks' was ordered into the Crows World sub-sector. Crows World and adjacent planetary systems had fallen into anarchy following heavy raiding by Eldar Pirates. The Fire Hawks' intervention would drive the Eldar from the human worlds, restoring Imperial rule and teaching the alien invaders an important lesson. The entire chapter-fleet, including the chapter's mobile space-fortress, made a successful warp jump from the Piraeus system a mere 120 light years from Crows World. The five ships, over eight hundred brethren, and two thousand other personnel expected to reach Crows World within no more than 12 hours. They never arrived. Twenty years after the event the chapter was officially declared lost in the warp and presumed destroyed. The great Bell of Lost Souls tolled a thousand times, and it said that the Emperor himself ordered a Black Candle to be lit in the Adeptus Chapel of Fallen Heroes. On 9667986.M41 a routine Imperial patrol passed through the Ork held system of Jakor-tal. The squadron uncovered altogether unexpected scenes of devastation. The limited facilities available to the patrol could uncover no clue to the identity of the attacking forces. The incident was noted and passed into the everlasting record of the Administratum. A rash of similar incidents within the same and adjoining sectors soon began to arouse the interest of the Inquisition. Squadron commanders throughout these sectors were reinforced and ordered to double their routine patrols. The incidents continued apace, increasing rather than declining in frequency and destructiveness. Even so, no sign of the intruders was discovered for almost a year. Then, on 3628987. M41, a patrol ship in the Maran sub-sector narrowly avoided a collision with a space-craft at the Cift jump-point. The patrol ship was entering the Cift system as the unidentified craft was leaving. Alerted by the close encounter, the patrol crew scanned the entire jump-area and discovered two long cylindrical objects within the intruder's projected flight-path. These were hauled aboard and proved to be standard space-coffins without identification markings. The coffins were shipped back to earth and opened by the Adeptus Mechanicus. The coffins themselves were identified as belonging to the Absolute, one of the spacecraft from the vanished Fire Hawk fleet. Inside were the armoured remains of two Space Marines. The unconventional armour colours and unofficial insignia puzzled the investigators, but serial numbers tallied with equipment made by or issued to the Fire Hawks. The armoured suits were expected to house members of the lost chapter, and were carefully broken open. The bodies within were human, but further identification proved impossible due to their advanced state of decay. The full truth would not emerge until almost a year later when a besieged Imperial research station received unexpected help. The garrison had been attacked suddenly by Ork pirates. After three hours of fighting the situation looked hopeless. Then, without warning, the Orks found themselves attacked in the rear. The ferocity of the fighting appalled even the station's defenders. Within half an hour, several hundred Orks had fallen to the mysterious, power-armoured figures. Then, as suddenly as they had appeared, the warriors vanished. This time they left behind a banner - the gnarled chapter flag of the Fire Hawks - and inscribed upon it was the motto In dedicato imperatum ultra articulo mortis (For the Emperor beyond the point of death). As well as the banner there was a recorder and sundry other sealed items. These were immediately shipped to Earth. From the data contained in the recorder the Administratum was able to determine exactly what had happened to the lost chapter. Following their warp-jump the entire fleet had been caught within a warp-storm of terrific intensity. Stunned by the power of the warp, the chapter was forced to endure the attacks of powerful warp entities. Ship after ship was destroyed and absorbed into the fabric of the warp. Soon only one craft remained. By a daring warp-exit manoeuvre the craft burst out of warp-space, emerging far in the galactic east, thousands of light years off-course and beyond even the psychic light of the Emperor. The original survivors numbered two hundred brethren. All gene-seed had been lost, all initiates killed, and most of the chapter's masters were gone. None of the ordinary human staff have survived at all. To make matters worse the brethren had changed. This change became more obvious over the next few months. Skins began to blacken and blister, flesh began to fester and putrefy. Slowly they began to die. Within days of the transition into normal space it became obvious that the chapter had been exposed to some form of dangerous mutation or disease. It took many years to navigate a way back into the Imperium, during which time almost half the brethren succumbed to the malady. Those who remained were no longer sane. Pain and despair had driven even their hardened minds beyond the point of rationality. Doomed to agonising deaths, they gradually became obsessed with their fate. Now they only wanted to die. But they were still marines, still loyal to the Emperor and humanity. They would not die without a purpose. So began the unstoppable war of the Legion of the Damned! The marines elected to remove all insignia from their armour. Instead their armour would be black, decorated by each brother with whatever emblems of death he chose (the accompanying illustrations show some typical variations). Most brothers employed a similar theme - skeletons, bones and skulls. All ranks and companies were abolished, most of the chapter's officers were already dead and the remaining warriors were too few to make up a fully functioning chapter hierarchy. All brothers were to be equal before death - levelled by the certainty of their assured extinction. The warriors decided to expend their lives attacking enemies wherever they could be found. The disease had robbed them of their sanity, but not their loyalty! And their condition gave them powers - powers that endow them with incredible fighting abilities. The legion is not a part of any Imperial force, and employs an unusual modus operandi. Apart from driving them insane, the contagion heightens their psychic awareness considerably. One result of this is the way in which the legion selects and attacks targets. These matters are left entirely to the process of divination provided by the mystic Tarot of the Emperor. This tarot is supposedly bound within the psychic will of the Emperor and is used throughout the Imperium as both a pastime and a form of divination. It is an undeniable fact that attacks seem to fall in 'the right place at the right time'. The Legion of the Damned certainly believe themselves to be directed by the Emperor - and who is to argue! As the fatal malady takes a firm hold, the victim begins to degenerate and putrefy. However, even as his body decays, he grows in supernatural vigour. Even though the marine's limbs become rotten and twisted he gains strength far beyond that of a normal marine. These powers heighten as the disease rages through the victim's body. At the moment of death, each brother reaches a peak in power, at which point the raw energies of the warp transmute the death throes of the doomed marine into a berserk orgy of destruction. Make no mistake - the Legion of the Damned may be few in numbers, but their powers are awesome! Just as their bodies are changed by contact with the warp, so their minds are hardened too. Brethren are completely immune to all forms of psychic attack or interference. They cannot be affected by the special psychic attacks of warp-creatures - although they may be harmed physically by physical attacks that such creatures may have. Astral spectres and other immaterial creatures cannot harm them in any way. The brethren have innate psychic abilities in the same way as a normal psyker. ORGANISATION The Legion has no formal organisation - it fights as a single body of troops. The only tactic possible to such a formation is to steam-roller over the enemy by a steady advance. Facing death - the final equalizer - the marines' command decisions are made by collective divination. Devices, emblems and personal badges are applied over the armour by individuals; they are not indicative of rank or function. EQUIPMENT The vast stocks of weaponry available to the Fire Hawks were destroyed along with the rest of the fleet. The surviving brothers have only a limited range of weapons, and most are armed identically. Powered armour and weapons are of standard type. BERSERK DEATH SPASM The marines are rapidly approaching the moment when they will be claimed by the warp contagion. No-one knows when this be. The rigours of combat tend to initiate the final stages of the disease, warping more and more raw energy into the marine during his final moments. Author: Rick Priestley |

There are lots of different facts of the Legion of the damned, i was wrong about the fire hawks, most stories about the legion are just myths. i think the fire hawks was a concept of the legions history that never came into play. They are created with the same gene seed as ultramarines and the nightmare legion. but i only know that the story of the legion and their former chapter name, the nightmare legion is the true story. fire hawks were the original idea behind the legion, but it was changed for some reason. i think the new story for the fire hawks was simply that they ware destoyed by nurgle, or became part of it... Ork are interesting as well, they are all phsycic but they dont know it, investigations inot theyre technology show that it actually dosent work at all, but the orks really believe that it does. they are phsycic in that their minds make their weapons work somehow, wyrd boys are just orks who are far more phsycic than the usual ones and actually realise that they have gifts, its all quite confusing really lol. They are called Orks because they evolved from the Krork, a genetic weapon of the Old Ones, created as the ultimate warriors to fight against the C'Tan. Over the millenia they have devolved into Orks, creatures who live only for war, and have genetic memory, meaning that certain Orks are born with the knowledge to build things or perform surgery on other Orks, and although they dont know it, have a strong phsycic presence, which is why things they believe such as red paint making vehicles faster or that yelling "DAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKA!" at the top of your lungs will make your gun fire faster actually work. Paragraphs??? - SSA |
Re: random facts Interesting fact, I never knew that, great post!! If the orks (or Krork) were to be united, no force in the galaxy could stop them. The ultramarines are the largest space marine chapter as they were not effected by the Horus Heresy. Horus knew that the primarch of the Ultramarines Roboute Gulliman was the best tacticion at that time, and hew would easily defeat Horus, so while the Ultramarines were fighting on the western front of the galaxy, the Horus Heresy urupted, and the Ultramarines were unable to help. |
Re: random facts Yea but they werent affected by the horus heresy because they werent arond to get affected, they were off fighting and so had no contact with chaos. Apart from small battles with minor chaos forces on planets within the imperium when they finally got back. |
Re: random facts i think that if the ultrmarines were there i think that the chaos would of been defeated much quicker and also more primrches were there they would have defeated horus faster and he may not of mortaly wounded by horus and he would still be out conquering planets |

Re: random facts the tt arguements wich still make it rumours and not offical? sekmet it seems to me you dont know about a lot of what youre talking about ... * is now expecting to be flamed* xD |

Re: random facts Guys i had a question, the primarches, they are the individual that started eachh chapter of the space marines right? Well how? |
Re: random facts Right here goes. I found that 2 of the 4 C'tan are as follows: The Dragon is actually the Imperium's Machine God and on Mars, and that The Outsider[apparently the most powerful C'tan there is] is in a Dyson Sphere created by the Elder or the Old Ones. Also, the pillars on Cadia, the unexplained ones, are actually constructs of the C'tan. They are the starts of a project to seal off the warp forever, seeing as that the the warp is the biggest weapon in the way off the C'tan's dominince. |
Re: random facts no acually the most powerfull is the void dragon, the outsider just went insane. and Omen101, the emporere gave the primarches there chapters, they didn't tehnaly start them |
Re: random facts The first 20 chapters were based of the primarch's gene seeds. The emp gave each recovered primarch command of the SM chapter based of their geneseed. |
Re: random facts there is another ctan called the harbinger in control of hive fleet harbinger (hence the name) well thats what ive heard anyway |
Re: random facts Quote:
But the nids can't be controlled by a C'tan. I mean, the C'tan have warp allergies. The Nids are being psychically controlled by the hive mind, the hive mind itself is a massic psychic force. Hive fleets can black out parts of the warp/pschycic communication. Fuck, hive fleets even travel trough the warp. WARP AFFINITY MEANS NO C'TAN INFLUENCE. teh end. Oh and that signature is the best thing ever. Ever. |
Re: random facts the nids avoid the outsider, the outsider dose not controll the nids |
Re: random facts No bloody C'tan controls the Nids to any degree. They could kick the Nids's arse though. |
Re: random facts I disagree...technically the dark angels chapter was a group of knights called the order on his planet..i think it was caliban, Lion El Johnson and Luther came to rule this 'order' and when the emperor came, many members of the Order became dark angels and went to fight for the emperor, others stayed on the planet and defended it from chaos like beasts which they had killed when they were in the 'order', anyway because the lion had become the primarch and got to leave this world and do greater things, Luther got envious and him and his men were corrupted by chaos, he fought Lion El Johnson and was beaten down but the Lion didnt have the heart to kill him, so Luther fired some sorcerous attack off at him, mortally wounding him...Dark Angels are more interesting than other chapters. |
