Imperium hands down the tau have firepower but if the imperium (space marines, deamonhunters AND witchhunters) get amongst there ranks they'll get slaughtered

yeah it would be the imperium but only for man power, but the tau dont suck, they just play differently to other armys, jsut because they dont fly in n stab people with pointy sticks doesnt mean they suck, the fact is that a full tau army set up for barrage is one of those few moments where you generaly feel sorry for your army.
and space_marine, it is all about the dice rolls, but thats the main difference in why a firewarrior is 12 pts and a space marine is 15, also the tau rely on multiarm combat, all the units working together to coodinate the best attack
I vote for the Imperium, but only because of superior numbers. Given the fact that the Imperium could never mount a truly full-scale war against just one of its enemies (with its military forces being spread thinly throughout a vast galaxy), the result of any actual conflict between the two sides would be more uncertain.
I don't hold with all this "omg Tau sux0rs" crap.. They're a decent part of the 40k universe, and can hold their own in the game. You may well have wiped out 84 firewarriors with your 20 super-duper elite bugs or whoever, but that's not the army list's fault; it's invariably down to the guys commanding the armies.

OK, the Ordo Xenos would totally get involved, but why would the Ordos Malleus and Hereticus be in? The Tau are not a psychic race, and don't present a daemonic hazard.
I think it says in the DaemonHunters codex why they would fight Tau. either because...
1) The Tau commander is possessed.
2) They have stumbled upon a chaos relic and it is tainting them.
3) They have boarded a chaos hulk and are trying to reactivate the warp drive, flinging thousands of daemons into real space.
Ah yes, it's the same in the Witchunters codex. But those reasons are there so that Daemonhunters players aren't restricted in their choice of opponents.. It's very doubtful that GW would incorporate large-scale storylines based on those same reasons into the overarching fluff.

Tau can't be possessed by Daemons, they're not psykers.
