Well if there's no .skin file, there's no way for the game or ModView to know what images to apply to the 3d mesh. (Hence it showing up completely white)
We can't help you there - you gotta find where it went.

Buddy, a .skin file is a text file that shows the game where your textures are. If you take a look at one that works (and a closer look at the model it's for), then it takes exactly a braincell and a half to figure out how they work.

Alright. I really hoped I wouldn't have to do this.
Spoiler:
And if you don't have a .skin file, YOU MAKE ONE.

hmmm...ok i sorta get it now. but I don't have icons for the torso legs and arms or those folders saying torso_a1 etc. maybe i should re-read that tut....
ok I got the model default changed to Jaicer (which is his name for now) and renamed the parts to Jaicerhead etc but it still shows up white and I still don't know how to make a .skin thing.

If you are happy with one of the other republic commando models and skins, but are having trouble with the species tut, why not make an npc file for each character you like?
This would give you two advantages:
1. You could bind multiple keys to the troopers you wanted to play as. This would let you change from TrooperA to TrooperB with the press of a button.
2. You could spawn other commandos as friendly allies to fight along side you. Bind them to some keys and you could quickly spawn an army of commandos.
hmmm...ok i sorta get it now. but I don't have icons for the torso legs and arms
You have to make them yourself. Easiest thing to do is copy the default icon and simply rename each piece, but that doesn't work well if you have more than one skin per piece.
My suggestion is to take another look at the tutorial. Carefully read each bit of it, and follow each step. The tutorials mentioned in this thread are the ones I learned from, so I can tell you that they work if you pay attention to what you are doing...

the problem with makeing him an NPC is that whenever I spawn him as an ally then become him he attacks me with the DC-15 rifle and kills me. and whenever I fight him back it says you betrayed your friends and it starts me over
