Softimage|XSI Modtools is free. But, I can't remember their link. Just google XSI modtools, I think. The download and software is free.

Milkshape isnt free, but theres a free trial. Theres Gmax (No trial) 3ds max(trial), blender(trial probably, dont know) and check sticky for rest.

Gmax is a good one too, but I believe you need either a plug gin to get the models in-game

You need an md3 exporter for gmax.

Also blender is free, so there is another option to choose from.

I think Maya Learning Edition is free as well. =p

Maya PLE is indeed free. Learning curve is steep, but it's what the majority of industry professionals swear by so it's a good one to learn.

Gmax is free.

Milkshape 3D is not free - and is not worth the $30.

XSI|ModTools is free, and is the only free modelling program which will allow you to compile player models for in-game usage.

Blender is free under the terms of the GPL.

LightWave is the way to go if you use Max OSX, the Windows release of LightWave is poorly optimized though.

There's others out there, but those are the ones specifically geared towards game modding (or have been adapted to games modding since release).

How good is Lightwave for JK3 modeling? To clarify, does it come with the proper tools to get the model in game and everything. I'm using Mac OSX and have always wanted to try my hand at modeling, so this is of great interest to me.

Is there a free modeling program that can import .MD3s?

Re: free modeling software?

Most of them can, you just need to install the relevant plugin(s).

It's pretty much useless for JKA, in my experience. Try as I might, I couldn't get it to form a usable UV map, or export to anything useful for JKA modding.
