Contest WIP

For those of you who aren't aware of JKFiles' skinning contest, check it out (and enter)!

I've been working on what will be my submission for the last couple of days, whenever I find I have time. Here's a bit of what it's looking like:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...s/render-2.jpg

It's rough right now. I'll probably roughly finish it, then go back and add in some details. I'm kind of just letting the model take me wherever it wants to go.

Suggestions are welcome. And no, I didn't have robocop in mind when I started. -_-

Also, post your own WIP images for the contest if you like. :)

Re: Contest WIP

Dang it! You are skinning the model I was thinking about skinning, and in a similar way too. :(

Awesome job though!

Inyri Forge April 19th, 2007 08:54 PM

Re: Contest WIP

Inyri cries tears of stone at how horribly rigged this model is... Raven did a piss poor job on it. But, eh. What can ya do? Makes me feel better about my mediocre weighing skills... since they're pretty close to Raven's skills XD

Still do your skin, btw. I'd like to see what you come up with :D

I don't know, it will be hard for me to top MW Soldier 4, which was on this model.

I still don't get how you could ignore the votes and NOT make it a modelling contest.

Re: Contest WIP

As I said in the comments on JKFiles, I'm making mine a full superhero, mainly going for humor. You could consider this a pre-WIP, and it's my first released skin. It's been educational. I learned A)how much the Weequay's armor bends; B)that the facial hair tutorial you gave on JKFiles doesn't quite work with GIMP's noise effects; C)that there's a reason there aren't too many Weequay skins; and D) that my computer slows down when I run Pakscape, 3 folders, GIMP, and modview at the same time.
And I just removed the head because I haven't skinned it yet, don't worry Inyri this has nothing to do with that .surf question

Because we just had a modeling contest. There will be another, don't worry.

Plus I have to balance whether the majority of the vote was 'do this because it'd be cool and I'd participate' or 'do this because I'm not planning to participate but I want more models!' The comments clearly suggested the latter.

Re: Contest WIP

Just a little question here, the theme is Heros and Villains, but you can only submit one skin. Can you have team skins, one of which is coloured to be a Hero, the other a villain?

Inyri Forge April 20th, 2007 08:09 AM

Re: Contest WIP

That would be two separate skins. Making more than one skin would give you an unfair advantage over those who only could (or wanted to) make one. This is why we've limited it to one.

There's nothing to stop you from making your skin's counterpart after the contest is over, though. That'd be kind of cool, in fact.

Inyri Forge April 20th, 2007 10:23 PM

Re: Contest WIP

A bit of an update. He's... changed a little since the last pic. But the skin's basically done, unless someone has a suggestion.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ods/ingame.jpg

Team skins will most likely just be a true blue and then a red glow, with the base skin remaining the same. So people who like red and black can still enjoy.

Saw this thread and thought i should check out the compition :P looks pretty good, reminds me to put some shaders on :P
anyway thought it would be only fair to show mine, its still a work in progress but i like how its going :P

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...aik/screen.jpg

i thought it would be a nice idea to do a hero from yesteryear, where hes got older and fater but is now trying to get back in the sadle as it were :P sooo...nobody steal my idea ;)

Looking good, but keeping the original face is really going to bring its creativity value down. Hope you plan to change it. :)

I can't skin, when shall they do a moddeling comp?! Anyway, my Pink Stormtrooper will totally blow the judges minds. You don't stand a chance against the pink.

Re: Contest WIP

PINK SUX!Joking, Well not at all, I'm quite impressed with the merc, but i think the best skins ever are the RP skins, they are so original (Maybe not >.>), I mean they are a complete new character and some have a very cool qualitiy.I dont think i'll enter this contest since I dont have the right programs to skin, (Only have Paint :) )Anyway, Nice Job :)
.. Btw, the fat guy skin is really cool.

Re: Contest WIP

Inyri: I think theres either too much going on with the torso, or not enough going on with the legs. Somehow the legs (except for the ankles) seem bare. But adding something to them may just make the skin look too busy. As it is right now, I like it.

That belt kinda thing on the lower torso isnt driving me crazy though.

sithlord6 April 21st, 2007 07:58 AM

Re: Contest WIP

And here's a disclaimer. You can go ahead and say my skinning sucks, it's a heck of a lot of fun anyway. Also, I didn't know Inyri did very much skinning. Not bad at all though.
I'm off to practice shader-ing!

Inyri Forge April 21st, 2007 10:17 AM

Re: Contest WIP

I don't do much skinning. I texture all my own models, though, so it's basically the same.

That is the kind of spirit I was hoping for from this contest. :p

Re: Contest WIP

Curse you Inyri! Your skin is very similar to the one I had planned (right down to the shaders). >.<

*sigh* Back to the drawing board.

Re: Contest WIP

It is very good. Although that sets a very high precedence for the rest of us in the contest. I personally am very glad that the quality of skinning is not the only portion of the contest. If this were the case, I am pretty sure I would lose it hands down. That doesnt mean I wont try however. As it has been said above, Skinning is fun anyway.

"No... the pleasure is all mine."

Inyri Forge April 21st, 2007 05:43 PM

Re: Contest WIP

The quality of the textures are only part of the skin (and mine aren't necessarily pro-quality). All the parts of a skin come together to make it as a whole. Presentation, creativity, subject, and quality (along with a lot of other things) are what make a skin, not just one individual aspect. This goes for all other forms of modding as well.

Of course in the end, after the finalists, it's a popularity contest, so... Can't speak for the rest of our community. They are not known for picking the highest quality work, though. They usually pick the "coolest" one -- the one they'd want to play with. So that's where the creativity part becomes really important. :)

Re: Contest WIP

FYI if anyone's interested in doing some voice work for this guy's soundset, let me know. I'd prefer to have something custom rather than using one of the default soundsets. Only offer if you think your voice fits the character, please.

Innocent Hawk April 21st, 2007 10:48 PM

Re: Contest WIP

I'm up for it! I have a pretty deep voice to begin with, and have a couple of sound editing programs to make it higher or lower or electronic etc., etc.

Oh, and beware Inyri, my villain is coming for your hero!

Inyri Forge April 21st, 2007 10:49 PM

Re: Contest WIP

That's going to be hard, because my hero is a villain. :p Unless you think he should be a hero...?

Whip me up some samples. I'm sure you can be suitably creative.

It's a villain? Yeah... for some reason it just seemed more hero-like to me. What with the glowing armor and star-like things on the chest... oh well, that's just my usual cluelessness for ya. :cya:

Also, who says villains can't go after each other? :p

As for the voice samples... it would help if I knew what to say. If it was a hero it could be typical corny super-hero taunt and catch-phrases lol. Villain though... I dunno. For yours anyway.

-Samurai- April 22nd, 2007 01:00 PM

Re: Contest WIP

I dont think its a super villain. So you could just say something like "you cant kill me" or "Im going to take you down!". I always find recording the falling sounds fun. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

Inyri Forge April 22nd, 2007 01:23 PM

Re: Contest WIP

Oh he's not a super villain. He failed villain school, actually... He's more like the right hand to the super villain. Rocksteady-like. Maybe not that smart... ;)

Re: Contest WIP

It would look rather weird if it were to be made anything with it, really.

You can't add anything "inside" the leg, for eg. a bone. So that'll do just fine. Actually looks rather neat aswell.

Innocent Hawk April 23rd, 2007 03:10 AM

Re: Contest WIP

Don't be fooled by the modview screenshot. In-game you actually can see the inside of the legs and arms, basically making them look like ghostly, empty bandages. Also, the chains form all around the arms can be seen, not just the ones directly in front. ;)

If it bugs enough people though, I can change it.

Since other people are starting to show what they have done:

It's still a way off yet. Only the orange one is being submitted for the contest, but there are other variations on the way, and possibly a map to go with them.

Indeed. This should be the author's work, not the work of a third party. It would completely defeat the purpose of the contest.

-Samurai- April 23rd, 2007 11:21 AM

Re: Contest WIP

Im getting kind of concerned with the contest thus far. There seems to alot of villains and few heroes. Maybe the people making heroes havent shown their work and dont plan to untill the contest?

If I could skin, I'd skin a hero. You cant have villains without heroes. But I couldnt even skin a pencil to save my life. Maybe I'll give it a shot though.

Crossbolt April 23rd, 2007 11:59 AM

Re: Contest WIP

I can see it now. A new hero emerges in an attempt to destroy evil. He is... The Pencil-Pusher!

Rest assured that I will be making a Hero to combat the plethera of Villians emerging from the darkness. When I have any sort of progress, it will be posted here.

okay, SO it's not that impressive yet, it's more or less just a design sketch that happens to run ingame.
