Re: Contest WIP

The problem about capes that arose in the Incredibles would have no effect in JK3. Why? because the cape would have to be static. Thus, it would not catch in anything.

*grumble* Stupid Q3 engine *grumble*

A WIP stands for Work In Progress. It is the skinning that you probably do not know how to do. It really isnt that hard though. If you take the time to learn and to read tutorials, I am sure you yourself could come up with an excellent skin.

"Now go do it! STAT!"
"What does STAT even mean?"
"I dont know. I just like speaking in anagrams."
"You mean SIA."
"What?"
"Speaking In Anagrams. SIA."
"Now you are just being stupid."

Nah, I'd be happy to help if they have photoshop. If not... well there is only so much I can do at that point.

Re: Contest WIP

Well you see, the fun loophole here is that you can photosource, if you take the photos yourself of course. I happen to be a small time photographer, so I can take pictures of my shirts vests and pants to photosource then work on. MRUAHAHA, the cheepness runs wild. I will have it known though, I'm not entering to win, only to enter and learn a few things.

Sometimes everyday people can be heroes.

Re: Contest WIP

1Shot is right. As was suggested before, Heroes or Villians do not necessarily mean fancy getups complete with tights. The only thing that is consistant is that it has to be original.

I personally have a Superhero who has been shunned from his work and is disguised as a bum so that he can continue fighting evil without anybody bothering him. He no longer wears a fancy get up. But that is part of who he is, which in turn makes for a really interesting character.

-Samurai- April 23rd, 2007 08:17 PM

Re: Contest WIP

So if you're going with the classic bum look, I have a great technique for facial hair/stubbles. Create a new raster layer over your face, airbrush your hair color(set it up to be like the spray can in paint) and when you're done, apply a gaussian blur set to the magnitude of 1. Works for me anyway.

I worked off the tip for facial hair that you gave me some time ago and combined it with the process of making a saber blade in pictures.

Im finally learning to use Corel Paint Shop Pro X. Best investment in a computer program I've ever made.

Lord no... you didn't just say to blur a solid color... >.<

Re: Contest WIP

Well. After about 2 hours I have a general idea for what Im going to do.

I know his eyes need to be darkened and his shinguard things are too bright as well. I have a couple of ideas for him but I'll get to that tomorrow. Also, if anyone knows a good way to completely redo a face, please let me know. I have the day off tomorrow so I might just read some tutorials and completely resart.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The screenshots dont do the beard justice. It doesnt look nearly that bad in-game.

It's cheech isn't it!? I knew it. it's cheech! Where's chong? Maybe I should make chong! You can't have cheech without chong! (If anyone misses this reference, I'm far too old)

Also: That picture I posted earlier will most likely NOT be my contest entry anymore, I had a great idea over night.

Re: Contest WIP

I was thinking it looks more like Triple H. Yes, I was a wrestling fan, back before it became a soap opera.

Anyway. Dynamic glow on the outside edges of the shoulder pads and the line on the pants turned out ugly, so Im out of ideas.

Random poll for people's ideas:

I'm going to give him a vest. Should it be a black pinstripe vest (with skull and crossbone buttons), or a plain black double breasted vest with a zipper?

nice to see more ppls work :P just so u know my guy is a hero, im leaning towards a gritty time traveling cop (more comical fat guy) :P or a security guard who thinks hes more uber then he is :P

Heres a update on the main skin, ive added a shader now thou so the armor shines :)

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/dravaik/final.jpg

And btw, what do ppl think of the face? i tried to make him look quite old, and suggestions would be appritated :P

-Samurai- April 24th, 2007 08:28 AM

Re: Contest WIP

I like it.

To make the face look old, try lightening the color of his beard/hair or add in some whiteish patches.

Also, from what I can see, his face skin doesnt match his neck skin. And his hands are too young looking for his face. Other than that I think you've got a great skin there.

I love the time traveling cop idea btw.

Innocent Hawk April 24th, 2007 10:27 AM

Re: Contest WIP

His beard seems to stretch too far down his neck, like you took the photoshop smudge tool and dragged it a bit too much downward. If you are using photoshop, try using the smudge tool that is part of the liquefy tool set instead... if that made sense lol. I'm at school right now so I can't tell you exactly where it is.

Other than that though the skin is pretty cool. Just need a funny sound set to go with it.

Crossbolt April 24th, 2007 11:06 AM

Re: Contest WIP

His face doesnt look old, it looks decaying. Most older people do not have that many wrinkles on them. Sure some wrinkles are more prominint than others, but yours looks like... well like I said above. Like its decaying off of his face. I would suggest less lines. You only need the prominint ones in certain areas. There are a couple of *old* skins out there that you can look at to see how the face wrinkles. Like Old Ben or even Luke.

Dravaik April 24th, 2007 11:30 AM

Re: Contest WIP

Im not sure what ur looking at, there arnt that many wrinkles on him, well in the actual flat texture there isnt, i think ur looking at parts that arnt wrinkles, thats just coz im not good at the basic skin texture :P
But if u need a reason, heres one, Hes alergic to time travel :P

Technically aging is decaying. :P

Ryo Thorn April 24th, 2007 11:52 AM

Re: Contest WIP

I want some technical clarification on the rules, is it allowed to leave parts of the original texture in place with some modifications, or do all textures need to be completely colored over?

Also, WIP shot:

(The main part I want to leave is the face, because it's looking pretty brilliant at this point)

Inyri Forge April 24th, 2007 12:13 PM

Re: Contest WIP

I never said you couldn't use parts of original textures. I just said you couldn't used other custom content.

Ryo Thorn April 24th, 2007 12:18 PM

Re: Contest WIP

Right! Then Things are going really really well!

I just really wanted to be sure I was following all the rules, and since everyone seemed to be making all original faces of some sort I thought I might have been missing something.

Im hoping to do more to him but I really dont know what else to do. I have to do sounds and team colors still, and come up with a name a background.

Hmm that reminded me to add some sounds, ive got em recorded, but obviously things aint as easy as that :P So whats the best way to make them/program?

Innocent Hawk April 25th, 2007 12:19 PM

Re: Contest WIP

He's kinda cool, but you didn't really do much with the skin. It looks like the majority of the original skin is still intact. See if you can think of something else to add to it.

Also, is he a hero or a villain?

I recommend Audacity. It's free, it can record from multiple sources (microphone, applications running on your computer, etc), and it can add cool effect to the sounds you record. In order to save anything in .mp3 format though, you need to download an install the LAME MP3 Encoder (LAME is the name, not a description ;)), but afterwards you are set to use it.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you have any questions about it that the site's FAQ doesn't answer, ask me.

-Samurai- April 25th, 2007 12:30 PM

Re: Contest WIP

Yeah, actually pretty much all of it is intact. This is my first skin and Im slowly figuring things out. Im not so great when it comes to skinning. I'll probably end up starting over atleast one more time. For now its just kind of a recolor. I might even just forget the contest and work on it untill its changed enough so that it doesnt resemble the original skin.

Dravaik April 26th, 2007 08:22 AM

Re: Contest WIP

Yea i checked the forum before posting, so i dloaded Audacity and the encoder already, and tried to record, using mono 44100Hz and in 16 bits, but it isnt workin so i still get default kyle taunts. Any one know wat im not doing? or if u could list some steps that would be great to. :)

Inyri Forge April 26th, 2007 08:30 AM

Re: Contest WIP

Open the console and see what errors it gives you. This will usually tell you exactly what's wrong with your audio so that you can fix it.

Taunts and music are the ones things where the engine will give you real and useful information on what's wrong. Wish the rest of the game was that way... -_-

Dravaik April 26th, 2007 08:50 AM

Re: Contest WIP

Nah i would of noticed a error, it doesnt do anything, at all lol. and i have put stuff in the right folders and checked the .cfg

Inyri Forge April 26th, 2007 08:52 AM

Re: Contest WIP

If there are no errors then it's probably not detecting the files at all. Are they in the misc folder?

Dravaik April 26th, 2007 09:12 AM

Re: Contest WIP

Indeed they are, all the folders are all labeled correctly.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...s/render-2.jpg

It's rough right now. I'll probably roughly finish it, then go back and add in some details. I'm kind of just letting the model take me wherever it wants to go.

Suggestions are welcome. And no, I didn't have robocop in mind when I started. -_-

Also, post your own WIP images for the contest if you like. :)

Oh and btw he looks like someone from Transformers called Red Alert :P
Yeah so Inyri what I meant is there a program that can easily make the shader for you? And how did you get that texture effect on your entry?
