Hey Everybody, First off let me say that I am somewhat of a noob to this whole skinning thing... so with that said you can continue on or press alt+F4
Okay, so I've begun my own skinning of player models with in Jedi Academy and I've gotten most of the basics down. Using the .pk3 files to extract the player models, setting up all the necessary directories, using ModView to open player models and view edited versions, taking the models .jpeg images and editing them to create new versions, and finally putting the finishing touches on the whole deal and saving up a fresh new JKA skin.
So I have all that done, what I want to do now is be able to edit the skin's 3 dimensionally, i.e. - add a sword to the back of a model, or some long dreadlocks for a hair style... but I'm having trouble finding where to start here to get this done.
So..... question being here is, what program are you guys out there using to get this done or how do you go about adding on to skins like this. Any advice or brief tutorially would be cool.
First let's start with the basics:
a MODEL is a three demensional (in this case) object rendered in the game engine (by default it is white).
A SKIN is the actual coloring of said model (as you know).
Now what it sounds like to me is you want a 3d sword on the back (3d=model...in this case) which cannot be done with a skin, you would have to edit the model it's self...and that means you must buy 3dsmax (around 3 grand?) as no one will likely do this for you.
However, if your a big Deadpool fan (luv the avatar) and want to add a sword, say to the grey fox (made by k2k_h20), I would suggest getting the ninja model done by darth_kitty (it is grey_fox) which has weapon tags on it's back, however I am not sure how they work so you might contact her. If I am wrong, ignore this paragraph.
Some people request modeling thingi-ma-jiggies on the forums with about a 1% success rate. Good luck and GOD's speed!
I'm not about to make any requests for skins I'd rather make them on my own, the 3 grand for 3d studio max is just a little bit out of my price range but I might have a friend that could hook me up and let me try it out or I think they might have a 30 day trial for it or something.
I think I might already have the ninja model, I dl'd it from lucas files. I'm gonna try and see what these weapon tag things are all about and work on this skin ( yes planning on making a deadpool skin, plus some others)
the pk3 contains the original authors skin and even if they didn't create the model it will include the model used. The skin just covers the model. If you're editing a skin not made by raven you should be getting permission as well.
If you email darth kitty and are polite, I'm sure she will give you permission. I already asked to reskin a couple of her models and she gave me permission. for deadpool I have a few suggestions:
1. In the skins, you can shut off a couple of the surfaces, these will give you the basic heade such as deadpool. a section for the head file should look like this:
setting the selected surface to "clear" will make it invisible in game. I had problems with the "text" surface because I think it was named wrong, it said "text" not "head_text" as it should have been.
2. If you have troubles getting the head down right, I can send you a copy of my head texture as it resembles deadpool's very closly.
3. new sounds if you are going to release it...a possible recommendation would be bruce campell's voice from evil dead or army of darkness.
