How do you install new things?

How would I go about installing a new skin, or a new map. what should I zip the .zip file to?

Unzip the file into the gamedata/base folder. This will work with 90% of the files you get. For some, like larger mods, it will come in just a folder, which you place in the Gamedata folder, and run through the Mods menu in-game.

In the future, the readme should explain how to install things. If a file doesn't come with a readme you may want to rethink using it... ;)
