Question Question to all mappers who use GtkRadiant

I was referred to this GtkRadiant program by Inyri, and I was having some trouble learning the program. I am, however; getting quite used to it. My problem is this.... I create a small test map for Jedi Knight 2..... I made a square room with some player spawn points, a light & a small pool of water.

I go into jedi knight multiplayer & when it comes tothe main menu i don't even click play - create server... I just immediately drop the console down & type /map mymapname ..... It works like a charm, and i can run my tiny map with no problems..... I wanted to try to run the map on a server to see if it would work & see if my brother could play it without a problem as well... I started the server with a default map (bespin streets) and I drop the console & type the map command again..... it says the map .bsp could not be found...... I tried throwing the .bsp file into a pk3 & dropping it into the base directory..... nothing..... The only way i could get it to run was by putting it in the maps folder in the assets2.pk3 file. This is a real pain-in-the-butt way of doing this..... & i'm sure there's an easier way.... I just do not know what that way is!

Am I doing something wrong or is there something i'm not doing?? Thank you in advance for your time! I appreciate any help you could give me!

Also, in GtkRadiant...... How do i rotate the player spawn point so that the player doesn't face a wall?

Dave

Default Re: Question to all mappers who use GtkRadiant

You may need to include other things in your .pk3, such as an .arena file. An .arena file is a file that describes basic information about your map so that it can be run. Just open up your /scripts directory, right click, select New -> Text Document, then rename it to filename_of_the_bsp.arena. Just click OK if it says it may render data unusable (what data? ). Then open it. The setup for the .arena file should be as follows:

Code:
{
map         "filename_of_the_bsp"
longname "The Name of Your Map"
fraglimit   30
type        "ffa team_ffa"
}
"Map" is the name of your .bsp, without the .bsp extension. "Longname" is whatever you want it to say when it's loading the map (usually the name of the map). "Fraglimit" is the default kill limit, I think (And I'm not even sure it's required ). "Type" is whatever gametypes the map supports, separated by spaces. Some gametypes are: ffa (Free For All), team_ffa (Team FFA), duel (Duel ). I don't remember what the others are, like Power Duel, for instance. Then create a /scripts folder in your .pk3 and place the .arena file there.
Also, make sure that you're putting your .bsp file in a /maps folder in your .pk3. When you say you just "threw it in," you may have forgotten to make the folder.

As for the rotation of the spawning location, select the Spawn entity and press 'N'. It will bring up the Entity window. In the bottom left corner, there should be eight buttons for eight basic directions (north, south, east, west, NW, NE, SW, SE), and two buttons to the right for straight up and down. Just click the direction you want it to face (according to the top view in the editor), and an arrow will appear inside the entity indicating the direction it will be facing.

If any of this doesn't work or is inaccurate it's probably because I did most of it from memory (except the .arena syntax). Also, if you don't understand something, say so. Hope this helps

Thumbs up Re: Question to all mappers who use GtkRadiant

AWESOME!!!!!!!! You rock!!!! I did all of that & it worked! My map now shows up on the list along with all of the other maps when i go to create a server! Thank you so much!!!

As for the player spawn rotation...... I should've figured that out on my own... Especially since i've been doing a lot of tweaking with the entity property menu...... I should've put 2 & 2 together & i would've figured that one out! LOL Oh well.... can't think of everything, right? That's why we have these forums to ask questions! LOL

Well, thank you again for your help!!! I owe you one! lol
