Default An idea for a modding project?

Hi everyone,
Today I bring you an idea; whether or not it’s a good one, I’m not sure yet.

I’m not sure why, but the other day I thought: “Wouldn’t it be cool to have an open-source EAW mod, where all the files are uploaded somewhere people can access them, make changes as they see fit, posting a list of changes they made at the end.”

Of course my next thought was “But then you’ll get people coming along and abusing it, ruining other peoples work.”

This lead me to the next stage of my idea: “Form a mod team, who have access to the files on a site like Dropbox. Each member of the team has a set time period where they can download, edit and re-upload the files, adding to a change log shared by the whole team; this way, the rest of the team know where not to edit.”

The idea is to build a mod with no set plan or outline; just see what gets thrown together. (Improv mod building?)

There would have to be rules set, like “Don’t make changes that you can’t fully test in your allotted time period”.
It would suck to get a hold of the mod, and then spend your whole turn dealing with exception errors.

It’s not something I’ll be seriously considering right now, as the time I’m not spending on Uni work is being spent working on my mod, pushing for a May/June/July-ish release date, as well as doing a bit of modelling for some people.

Just thought I’d put this out there and get people’s thoughts.

Cheers,
AUS_Doug.

(I also posted this on EEAW; don't panic, you aren't going crazy)

I'd throw in some old republic era rerigged warb null ships, along with some textures and several gcw style imperial meshes (no textures or rigging)

I like the idea, though if it starts getting serieus, you need some people in charge who make the final decisions, otherwise people will keep changing stuff to how they want it. Still the open source idea is great imo.

I lift up my knife with great rage, stabbing it into the peanut butter jar, pulling out the guts of the jar; it's creamy peanut butter! I slam it with all my wrath onto the slice of bread, as I make a peanut butter sandwich! You're next... jelly.

Whilst this is a good idea in theory in practice you'll find it's notes single because of the fact that every modded has his/her own idea of how a mod should be made.

BORG: Incursion - Vital Responses project creator.
BORG: Incursion - The Next Level mod for Star Trek: Armada I - Mod DB

This. I'd throw in edited faction files that have increased cap, and files that allow you to build units that you can't normally build (twi'lek commando, pirate troopers, skiff, pods, etc.)

Sounds like fun,

I would make many space units buildable by all factions and some land and space units only on respective planets!

This is a pretty cool idea. I'd be willing to add some code, like giving starfighters secondary weapons (i.e. A-Wing concussion missiles) and creating some new types of weapons (nothing too complex). Maybe even some projectiles too.

Edit: It would be smart to add a changelog file in the dropbox directory. That way all the changes can be consolidated and easy to keep track of.

Agreed, I usually put missiles on the Rihkrxyrks (Pirate_Fighter) in my personal mods.
