certain mods will not open due to Aol?? Please help

well, ive recently downloaded sci-fi at war and no matter where i download it from, it will not open. When i click on the file, it tries to load aol for some reason, and due to me not having aol, it tells me i lack the software! Please help, i really wanna play this mod!

what doesnt open?

the rar file? exe. install file? or shortcut?

They shouldnt have anything to do with the Internet. If they do, somethings wrong.

Most likely they are in .rar format, and your computer is trying to open AOL to get whats needed to open it. Just a guess though.

It wont open the folder that contains the mod data. When i download the mod and try to access just the folders, its opens up AOL. Ive tried accessing it in diff. programs, but i have no idea which to use

So you've already unzipped the contents and it just won't let you get to the actual files? What is the file extension on the file you are trying to open...because if it has one than you aren't clicking on a folder... There should be no reason why a mod would try to access AoL, especially if you don't even have the program installed. Admiral Antillies is right though, this would be easier to solve if we could see what you are seeing. Give us some screenies please

The first thing I would do though is download a different mod and see what it does when you do the same thing to it that you're doing to this mod.

I can even unzip it mate, the entire thing i downloaded is just one file that opens with aol for some reason. I have no idea why, its the sci-fi mod. Ive tried downloading it from diff. websites, made no difference

It amazes me just how many people don't know what a RAR file (and no, this isn't picking at you (IAF)Warender14. This is a general fact).

Anyway, RAR is a large archive based program and for those that don't know you need WINZIP (from version 10 upwards), or WINRAR (any version should do) (also 7zip should also work for both). I would suggest WINZIP as it also handles alot more formats than just ZIP and RAR. Install the chosen program and right click the RAR file in question. Then from the context command window that appears just select:

Extract to Folder C:\Documents and Settings\'your user name'\Desktop

Then install the mod according to the readme text based instructions (as long as the mod has one).

Oh, so that's the issue here... Yeah, I use 7zip personally (because you have to buy Winzip or it flashes BUY ME windows in your face and 7zip is just free).
