Adding Textures and skins

Ok i've got this new model that i made ande i want to add textures onto it which i assume has to be done in 3ds max what proccess do i go throught to add the textures/skin ?

first off, get gimp or photoshop
second, go to www.proclone.net for some good texturing and UVing tuts

what imean is how do i link the texture to the model

ya i want to know so far from what i understand is that u have to give the skin a assigned shader
