Quick question.

hi i'm new here (was a bigger user in BCfiles) and i just have one quick question, call me a noob if you want.

Without looking through every single map, can someone tell me IF it is possible to have a flyable capships (the frigates or the bigger ones) mod, or does the game engine not support this?

thanks.

Re: Quick question.

Well technically you can. If your PC is capable. And if there is a model that is one whole and not in parts lol. Not sure, but the games engine can handle hudge models I like too think. But there are some models that will simply crash the game from being too huge.

Size is irrelevant. All that really matters is polycount. There is obviously an upper limit to what makes sense, sizewise, because the game will only render up to a certain distance for the main LOD and then a longer distance for a low-detail LOD.

Having capital ships flying around (or not) is a matter of practicality more than possibility. You can make whatever model you want fly around, but because no physics are supported in the game, you can't have an interactive model (i.e. one with an interior) be a moving entity too. There is the matter of implementation as well for larger ships, since vehicles by and large aren't initialized as "flying" - they have to take off from somewhere.

so your saying its possible to have the smaller caps (frigates) take off from some huge, invisible platform in space, but the larges ones will not work because they have interiors.

Well from what I understand mav is saying, size doesnt matter, only poly's count does. Techiccally you can take off with a capital ship and land LOL!! But from the captial ships ingame, they are in parts, not a whole model, so you will be flying with one part of the capital ship while the other parts stay put.

"Not to worry, we're still flying half the ship." :lulz:

Puns aside, size does matter (as I said it affects LODs of the model), it just doesn't matter in this context - which is why I said "irrelevant."

Whether something has interiors or not has nothing to do with their size. If you're talking about the models that come with the modtools, then the "largest ones [with] interiors" won't work not because of size or internal composition, but primarily (as icemember alluded to above) because they're made up of more than one model. Any vehicle has to be a single .msh file. If you really want to have a flyable capital ship (which as I said is not something that's really practical in this game), then you will really need to be doing some modelwork of your own anyway, because none of the static single models used even for the frigates are set up to be used as vehicles. You could use them, but it would be sloppy and no better than using a bunker model, or a building model, or whatever as a vehicle - none of them are set up to work that way.
