Howdy. Newbie needs some help. Hi folks. I'm new to Star Trek Legacy and this forum, but not entirely new to modding. I've made a few for a game called Star Shatter and I look forward to contributing to this community in some way. My computer is a HP Pavillion 061 AMD Athlon 3500+ 894MB RAM Vid Card is ATI Radeon Xpress 200 DAC 400 Mhz 128MB total memory I have installed the Legacy v 1.2 patch and the community mods. I have the following issues: Nebulae make my frame rate unbearably slow in some of the campaign missions. I deleted the post process folder from Shaders and that helped alot. Most of the campaign missions are pretty good now when I use the low graphics setting. But what to do about the damn Nebulae? I can't believe that the game designers did not include a way to turn the damn things off. Without nebulae spoiling my fun, for instance in the skirmish mode, I can crank my 3d and open GL settings to max and play the game in 1024x768 with a frame rate as smooth as a baby's ass. The game looks so good it's stunning. Then I go to play the "Behind Enemy Lines" mission and have to turn everything so far down the game looks awful. Any ideas? I intend to upgrade, but in the meantime? Other things. For some reason when I disable an enemies engines they don't break off of the enemy ship anymore. The damage effects are one of my favorite things about this game. Where should I look for the problem? The game is buggy. It's hard to get the ship yard repair docks to work. Sometimes engaging the tractor beam turns them on and then they work but not always. Sometimes when I'm trying to target an enemy subsystem the mouse pointer gets stuck on screen. At that point I can no longer use the mouse at all, no looking around with the mouse, and I can't use the engineering screen to repair, have to abort the mission. In general subsystem targeting is wierd and unrelieable. I press T then the trigger on my joystick, then move the joystick in the direction of the system I want to target, but alot of the time only one or two systems is available to target. Sensors and weapons for example, when I want to target shields or engines. Often my target lock on an enemy ship will keep breaking off, especially troubling in a tight turning battle when the enemy continually pulls out of view off the side of the screen. Sometimes the 5 key works to select all ships for command in the Tactical View. Half of the time it doesn't and I have to Tab back to the game view to do it. Surely there is another patch in the works to eliminate the little bugs. But I would most like to see a feature to turn the damn nebulae OFF, or to reduce them to an absolute minimum. Anyway, despite the irritations, it's a beautiful game. |
Re: Howdy. Newbie needs some help. Besides upgrading, i would advise you to install the latest drivers for your hardware (most notably your graphics card) Oh and when you upgrade, the best bet for getting Legacy to run properly with the nebula thing is to get a new graphics card...which is a cheaper option compared with a new processor and motherboard etc. Hope that works. And welcome to the community. :D -By the way, you should note that no mods (other than retextures) can be used when playing multiplayer. So if you want to have both, you'll need to make a copy of Legacy and have one without mods. Till next time :cya: |
Re: Howdy. Newbie needs some help. Thanks for the info, which brings me to my next question. I just tried to install an unmodified version of the game for multiplayer, but the installer only wants to modify, repair, or uninstall the one I've already got. I tried renaming the Bethesda folder, but the installer was not fooled. ? |

Re: Howdy. Newbie needs some help. Had the same problem so I got a BFG 7600 GS OC AGP card with 512mb of ram and the main menu acts like it is on speed. not to mention I OC'd it a little more and put a zalman on it runnin 40 degrees C down about 10 degrees C from stock clocking and stock fan |
Re: Howdy. Newbie needs some help. Yeah, I've got to upgrade. This computer is two years old. It was hot stuff when I bought it. Now, not so much. I figured out that you just have to copy the Bethesda folder in Program Files and rename it, so the multiplayer thing is no problem now. Just can't find anyone on Xfire playing Legacy as of yet. I am still being driven nuts by this engine damage effects problem. I've reinstalled the game, and the unmodified copy I'm running should be pristine, other than being patched to vs 1.2. I've messed with my display properties until I'm blue in the face but still when I disable engines I see the engine coming off, but the engine nacel on the ship itself is STILL THERE. Surely someone else has run into this.? I've upgraded my display driver twice. This second time really improved things. The game is noticibly faster and smoother and it looks even better. Nebulae dense missions are still kinda slow whenever they come into frame. That's apparently going to be at least a $300 problem to resolve. I figured out that to get the subsys targeting to work you have to keep firing your phasers to bring up the various subsystems, just having a lock is not enough. It would have been nice if the game manual had given the barest clue how to use the finer points in the game. I suppose they rushed it out before some things had been fine tuned. All of the misinformation in the manual seems to indicate that. I feel sorry for people who buy this game that don't have access to the internet. Yes, such people do still exist. For people who have performance problems I have the following advice to add to the post process fix. Before I upgraded my drivers, I found that by reducing various graphics settings in Drect 3d and Open GL and playing in 600x800 helped alot. Especially Mip Maps. Mip Maps on the second to lowest setting don't look all that bad and frame rate improves. Also setting anistropic filtering down to 4x (or 8x) helps. The light effects don't look as good, but frame rate is better. Also, try turning the main settings slider all the way to the left (performance) and then tweaking the specific settings (anti-aliasing, anistropic filtering, texture, mip maps, etc) from there. You can end up with a game that looks OK and is playable. |

I had a PNY 7600 GS AGP with 512mb, and it wouldn't run with Legacy, it kept giving me Access Violations on startup, HOWEVER I later found out that it most likely wasn't the card, as it was an issue with my crappy motherboard and AGP fastwrite. I had the same issue with a BFG 7800 GS OC, until I used Riva Tuner to force AGP fastwrite on. Now Legacy runs beautifully even though my processer is below minimum specs (AMD Athlon XP 2600+). I have no issues running the game at 1600 x 1200, 4x AA, shadows and up to 3-4 AI. I do get some choppiness if I ramp it up to 5-7 AI however. The BFG 7800 GS runs soo much cooler than the PNY 7600 on my system (over 12 C difference), but I suppose that's because of the monster heatsink/fan. :D |
