Default HMMM i need a how to lesson

ok i have my first mod up it is modified torpedo texures originaly made by
P$ycoh i got his permission fo course anyway i was wondering when you texture ships how do you get that metal looking effect
ps i use gimp :P

Usually it's a matter of specular maps and material settings in Milkshape. The fastest and easiest thing is setting the specular level in MS3D to either white or something really close to white (light grey). Then you can also move the left material slider a little bit to the right until you've got a nice result.
The easiest way to create a specular map: Desaturate your image and adjust brightness and contrast to you needs. Is it supposed to be very metallic it needs to be brighter. If you add more contrast, you will also get some nice effects.
You'll have to try out yourself what's the best setting for it.

thank you for the advice but i am only 14 and don't have money for milk shape. I need to know how i can get a good metal like texture when i am retexturing somthing on gimp

I was 15 when I bought Milkshape...
anyway, if you want to retexture something you should try adjusting the specular maps (increasing contrast and brightness). As I said, simply try out a few things.
