Why does Star Trek Television Music Suck?
Chas_2003

First things first, this isn't about the movies, the music is great and TMP was nominated for an Oscar with it's soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith.

But why does the rest of it suck? Now, I think TOS Music is great. But when you look at the rest of it, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, its all... Boring. You can't really listen to much of it out of the show. Its all flat and meaningless. It sounds more like it just to set the mood, no real theme music you find yourself humming without even realising it. The opening music of cause is an exception (apart from ENT). TOS has the best music, its themes have gone on into the movies and TNG. TNG started with some deceant music, but then fell flat. It stopped using the music by Alexander Courage and Jerry Goldsmith.

Heres an example. In the final episode of TNG when Picard is in the past, Tasha Yar is approaching the Enterprise in the shuttle craft. When you see the ship instead of hearing the Star Trek fanfare which would have been perfect, you just hear, well nothing to talk about. Now, I can accept that they stopped using it for copyright reasons, but why not replace it? Well, whatever they did, nothing impressive.

One thing I hated when I first saw Enterprise, what they do in the title? Did they get a good composer like Jerry Goldsmith to write the music like in Voyager and win an Emmy? No, they used a POP SONG?!?!!! I mean, what the hell??? WHY?

Another thing is, why don't they use the title music in the episode. Seems kind of strange to me.

In TOS they used to have certain themes that i'm sure everyone can remember. Such as Spock's theme or Kirk's 'love' theme. It was great, all these themes that used to come back in different episodes.

In Stargate SG-1 they have great music, orignally it used alot of music from the film but also has some great original pieces. Almost all of it is now done by, guess who, Joel Goldsmith (Jerry Goldsmith's Son). Now, Star Trek, the best Sci-fi show out there (or should be) has music that can't even compare to the music from SG-1. Its crazy, they should get rid of Dennis McCarthey and his friends that all sound exactly the same and never produce music for an episode that stands out or sounds repetetive. Remember the music for Generations? Terrible music, why? Because they used Dennis McCarthy.

Of cause all of this is just my opinion. But to break it down...

Good: Movies, TOS
Bad: TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT

I agree that SG-1 has awesome music, and most ST series could use a little more motivation in the music dpt. However, I am actually pleased with the music for Enterprise. "Faith of the Heart" by Rod Stewart is a powerful and inspiring song that reflects what mankind went through to get to the space age as seen in Enterprise. I was actually getting sick of the same-old same-old as far as opening sequences go. DS9 has got to have the best ORIGINAL opening music I have ever heard out of a show. I do feel though, that the music used in Enterprise is an interesting step from the norm.

I find the music in DS9 is good but the station is not really massive enough to reflect that music.......... the song has a feel that something is massive, powerful and great but DS9 does not par in with those categories........... and by the way, how old r u Chas_2003??

all star trek music sucks, but what i hate most is the music that the crew listens to. they all listen to opera, COME ON!! they should at least have some of the crew listening to hard rock or punk or maybe even metel. now that would kick ass!! it would be awesome if the star trek soundtracks were rock!!

highly inapropriate......... unless the federation comes out with a radical ship design that suits to the punk and heavy metal style music............

It would be pretty neat if it were rock. But how would you even begin to design music that would be 24th century rock for Wesley to listen to?

I'm 16 years and 9 months old.

Anyway, heres a site that has a lot of Trek Music including music from all the series. It used to have it all in both 128kb/s and 24kb/s but they got rid of the 128kb/s versions for some reason.

This is the best music from each series but even then you can hear some of it is terrible. Enterprise although only has the music from the first episode which has better music than the rest of the series.

But really, why don't they have any original themes like in TOS. It would be great but they don't. ENT has Archer's theme but thats really as far as anything goes.

I can agree to that, but even so. Alot of the music is just boring and so you can't like it no matter what your style. Its supposed to be Orchestral and I love that type of music. But hey, it just sounds the same with no distinct themes that you can hum to.
