Re: Why does Star Trek Television Music Suck?

I think generations has one of the best opening themes. DS9 is ok, tng has the best, I especialy like how it starts out, and it has the classic theme carried over from tos. But voyager wasn't that great. And enterprises departure from classical type is a bit odd, though the seem to have enriched the song a bit this season, adding a few extra background tracks/instruments.

Captain Gantu, who is the girl in your sig?

Hmmm... The fact people are talking about the title themes suggests they don't know what I mean exactly. I DO like the title themes of all of them (except Enterprise). They where going to change it for Season Three but ended up just messing with the original one. Although the credits play Archer's Theme so I guess thats the real title, seeing as its used in the show and the song isn't. But what i'm really talking about is the music in the TV shows themselves. The weird thing is though for TNG, DS9 and Voyager, you rarely hear the main title themes in their full glory. You do here Jerry Goldsmith's theme in TNG quite a bit in the first season or so, but hardly at all in the later seasons. I mean take the last episode when Picard is approaching the Enterprise-D with Tasha Yar in the past, when he first gazes on the ship, it was a perfect to use the main title theme. But guess what? They didn't! I think Dennis McCarthy would have done that episode. Don't ask me why, maybe they have to pay royalties when they do use it, which would explain why the movies stick to using Alexander Courage's theme and not Jerry Goldsmith's as it would probably be cheaper. But with no memorable themes you don't get that uplift you get when they win or the tension and excitment you get in a battle. Music is very important and i'd personally rather see more spent on it that special effects. But really to prove a point, look at Stargate SG-1, the music is great! Not only do they use some of the memorable themes from the film (including the main one) they also have lots of others. You get so much more emotion from the episodes because of this. By the way, most of the music is done by Joel Goldsmith, Jerry Goldsmith's son. Anyway, thats just me ranting again.

Sure, I admit its still my opinion. But i'll ask you this question, what do you like more, the music in TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise (excluding the main title themes) or the music in Stargate SG-1?

SG-1. All the others (when it's during the episode) we're lucky to get four or five slow notes.

Most of the TOS and TNG music sucked (some from VOY as well), but DS9 was so much better! The DS9 overture even won an award, and deserved it 100%.
Of course the movie tracks are much better, more budget does it.
And Nemesis had some tracks that really suit BC battles...

The TOS and TNG Opening themes are the same song. I have the Music Collection of the first 30 years, the Name of the song is the Star Trek Suite and parts of it were fetured as both the TOS and TNG. I happin to like the TOS and TNG theme wich you have to remember was written in the 1960's

Heh, this is an old thread, I never saw it before.
I agree on some level. The theme music, which I know you're not really referring to, I liked from all but Enterprise. Although I'm not particularly fond of either incarnation of the DS9 theme, it's inkeeping with its stype at least.
As for the in-show music, I see what you mean. It gradually got more... flat, as the franchise developed. I noticed it when I was watching Voyager the other day. You can hear the music playing almost the whole length of the show, but I only really noticed it the other day because of how... boring, it is. Even the battle scenes don't get as good music as other series.
Although I must disagree that music is more important than visual effects. I would rather see see this advanced technology, and all these mysterious wonders, than I would hear a composer's interpretation of them. You use your eyes far more in day-to-day life than you do your ears. When you have a fantastical dream, do you have music playing? No. I would much rather they try to convey what their imaginative aliens, weapons, places and technologies are like by actually showing you - half the point, I think. Of course music is important, it adds to the mood, but not so much so as the image.

As for music, I only listen to classical, jazz and opera so I don't find anything wrong with it. My favorite is the extended version of the Voyager theme that's like six minutes long...

I like the music for Star Trek. The song for Enterprise is cool, doesn't sound to me like pop at all but rather easy listening.
