Starbase 42Is your starship in need of maintenance or does your crew need some R & R? Dock here and discuss anything related to the TV series and the films. Please do not discuss anything related to Star Trek games.
I'm afraid that aside from that dude who religiously writes his fan fiction, this forum has died an ignoble death. I'd post here myself to drum up conversation, but when you've been in a forum for ten years you sort-of run out of topics to bring up.
I'll watch the next film. I really will. I gave the first film a chance too. But as far as I'm concerned, Star Trek and all it stood for died many years ago. These new films are like zombies, in my eyes - they look similar to the original, but the soul has long departed the body.

^ This. I didn't mind the new movie and I'll probably give this new one a chance as well.
I recently decided to re-watch one of the Star Trek series and chose to watch Enterprise for maybe the first time since it was on TV. Honestly, I may actually enjoy that series more than Voyager and pretty much all of DS9 pre-Dominion War. Sure there were some bad episodes, but every series had its bad episodes (even the mighty TNG had quite a few doozies, IMO).
Zapp: I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kif?
Kif: [sighs] "Sex-lexia".
I'm going to give this one a pass in the theater(Which will be the first time ever for Star Trek). I still remember seeing TMP in the theater (oops, showing my age here).

I have to admit this new Star Trek film looks weird for one reason, a lot of Starfleet cadets or officers in military uniforms. I just found that really uncomfortable. Star Trek should be above the sort of thing this is looking to be.

If you think about it it is based off the military
I worry they're going to try to write a super-intelligent villain again. And the problem with that is that the writer is frequently incapable of writing anyone even marginally smarter than themselves. These vague menacing threats so often turn out to be al-Qaeda written by a clueless person.
That and I totally agree that this isn't really Star Trek anymore. At least not in the science fiction sense of using it to explore things. It's largely just an action film that uses the same sets and characters. Similar to the action bits of Nemesis really - which admittedly were the best bits of Nemesis but still....
