Who's your favorite Star Trek captain?

Ok I thought I would start a new thread here to find out who's everyone's favorite captain from any of the Star Trek Series. Please post why you like that particular captain as well if you could. I personally am going with Capt. Benjamin Sisko. I feel that IMO he's one of the greats because he's not only the captain he's also the Emissary. I also like the way he approaches all the problems that he faces in DS9.

Re: Who's your favorite captain?

What, no options for April, Pike, Harriman or Garrett (or Riker)?

Of the limited selection, I have to go with Picard (ok, so let's be honest; I'd vote for him anyway). And if you have to ask why...

Re: Who's your favorite captain?

Sorry I forgot to add some of those captains. Unfortunatly I cannot edit the poll either.

Re: Who's your favorite captain?

I'm currently going with Kirk. I'm gonna wait a while before voting, as I really want to vote for the ECH. :D

Robert April, don't have a clue who he was... Christopher Pike on the other hand... Harriman who? The Enterprise-B Captain perhaps? Barely remembered Garret from the Ente-C.

If Riker's gonna be up there, why not the legendary Hikaru Sulu? Captain Spock? Captain Montgomery Scott? What about the Captain Deckers? Matthew and his son William... Or Captain Hu Lin Radison? Wait, she's not canon. :D

Guyver February 4th, 2005 11:27 PM

Re: Who's your favorite captain?

Damned, seems I missed quite a few captains in that poll. If there is a captain that you like that is not listed in the poll please list him/her and why you like them as well.

Just to make it clear then. :)

The ECH, Emergency Command Hologram. A.k.a, the Voyager doctor in a red captain's uniform. :D

I didn't know there was an ECH. The only thing I remember seeing that was remotely close to that was the EMH.

Glad Janeway got none, she sucked.

Supprised about Archer, did not get any, he is alright, but not best.

Picard just plain rocked.

You post like the poll has ended. Its only been up for 2 hours, and its going into the weekend. It'll reach 20 more posts today easy.

Janeway still has a chance. :D

Agreed, I only posted a couple of hours ago as Monster_user has pointed out. I will continue to watch this to see what kinds of varying opinions we can get.

Janeway for sure...

she's pretty damn determined, wont be swayed away from her opinion, wont compromise unless neccessary, and isnt afraid to use her weapons (unlike Picard)

You're right, I completely forgot Spock and Decker!
My intent was to get all who captained an Enterprise mentioned:
Robert April commanded the Enterprise on her first five-year voyage. The only known picture of him is actually a very young Gene Roddenberry in an old Starfleet uniform :)
Christopher Pike we should all know from The Menagerie as Enterprise' second captain.
John Harriman, as you correctly guessed, captained the Enterprise-B. Little is known of him or his ship's missions, short of their brief appearance at the beginning of Generations.
Rachel Garrett, who commanded the Enterprise-C, is better remembered, both for the mention her ship receives in the defence of Narenda III, as well as it's appearance in Yesterday's Enterprise and the establishment of Sela's heritage in Redemption.
Riker makes the list merely because All Good Things established him to have taken command of the Enterprise-D following Picard's retirement in that timeline (whether or not you believe it depends on which canon you choose to follow).

Matt Decker commanded the Constellation, not Enterprise. Will was an omission on my part.
Scotty isn't known to have ever held a command of his own (at least, not in Starfleet), and as such wasn't on my list.
Sulu was, to anyone's best knowledge, a fine captain. But Enterprise Excelsior was not.

At any rate, that was my line of thought in offering my (two short!) list of other candidates who failed to receive mention. No sense in listing every Starfleet captain, now is there?

blurb23 February 5th, 2005 01:37 PM

Re: Who's your favorite captain?

Scotty did get the Genolan, in the TNG episode where the Enterprise gets trapped inside the Dyson sphere...

i still dont see why more people arent going with Janeway...she was better in all aspects from Picard... good diplomatic skills (she had a treaty with the Borg!), not afraid and do some hand-to-hand combat herself, and wasnt afraid to fire her weapons

Steakboy February 5th, 2005 01:57 PM

Re: Who's your favorite captain?

I think Riker is the best captain :p

He showed great command ability. I liked the fact that he was willing to take on the Borg cube and bring down Locutus, even tho it was Picard . . . I found that admirable instead of what I thought was going to happen, that they wouldn't attack it and just try to save the captain . . . instead they did both :D

He had the maneuvers down, as shown in Insurrection, he could think of unique solutions to a problem and execute it perfectly . . . . and my favorite part was to my recolection neither Janeway, nor Picard (which were my number 2, and number 3 choices) ever physically did anything, but often Riker just said, "I'll take it from here ensign" and took over the console. I found that awesome that he would actually get into the action rather than just sit and watch from his cushy little lazy boy . . . .

Re: Who's your favorite captain?

Kirk for me, everyone. Mainly for his combat prowess both hand to hand and in the command chair. Although Kirk did his share of negotiating as well. Balance of Terror has to be one of my favorite episodes of all time. None of the other captains can "get" the women like Kirk can either. Favorite character in Star Trek(captain or otherwise) is Spock.

Riker does :D and let's not forget that Data banged the entire Borg collective, so B4, with those memories and abilities, could out 'do' Kirk in an instant :p

Ok people, lets try to remember that this thread is about captains from Star Trek. I've already had to remove a couple of posts by people that insist on posting about captains that have nothing to do with the Star Trek franchise. Please stay on topic.

ok, the best captain was Sisko. How can you guys not see that? He is the only one who could actually fight and he was loved by the Bajorans and respected by Humans.

I just love how he could beat the hell out of a Jem Hadar....

God, you people
Janeway pwn3d them all.
She took a borg and made it an individiual again,
She wanted the peaceful way but wasn't afraid to get out there and fight either.
On top of it all she was a woman and still thouroughly respected as much as any guy.
Rock on Janeway.

What, you never saw I, Borg? Geordi did that long before Voyager was commissioned. The only difference was that Hugh didn't become a crew member, but rather rejoined the Collective, with somewhat disastrous results (Descent).

Janeway actually had a Borg become part of her crew, set free a bunch of drones (who will probably now have control because of the effects of Endgame), AND had her ship survive how many encounters with the Borg? all alone? no assistance? :p

in other words...

W00T! go janeway! :)

Re: Who's your favorite Star Trek captain?

Ah yes.
Nevermind the Enterprise-D's first contact with the Borg at System J-25.
Nevermind Enterprise-D's solo stand against the Borg cube in Sol, or the Enterprise-E's campaign against the Borg queen in First Contact.

Let's be honest, Seven of Nine's removal from the Collective was nothing more than a rehash of Third of Five's removal. The only difference is that Third of Five was reintroduced to the Collective, since nobody was leaving TNG's cast.

Not to denigrate Janeway; she's tied with Kirk for my second choice. But merely citing her efforts with Seven as being proof-positive as the best Starfleet captain is rather lacking. It would be a much better argument to point out that she managed to get back to Federation space from the Delta Quadrant in one piece.

right, right... all good points...

but you cant really count First Contact, because if you count that, then you have to count ALL of the encounters Voyager had with the Borg... the E-E was only up against 1 heavily damage cube and a couple hundreds drones... Voyager was practically up against the entire collective (a VERY dumbed collective though)

but, if you want me to argue that she got back from the DQ, i will :) what did Picard do that could possibly counter this? Janeway and her crew did a lot of work with slipstream and transwarp, got a few new weapons (Isokinetic canon, Nanoprobes, etc.) and ran into a temporal anamoly every other week!

True enough, but Wing Commander is my First Love amongst games.

I picked Kirk from the list given.
Why? Well, he was the archetype. Same goes with the crew that surrounded him.
As for write-in nommenies, I liked Ed Jellico (played by Ronny Cox in the "Chain of Command" two-parter. One of my fave BTW.

Though Picard did go up against (literally) a Romulan... thing.

janeway. it really takes some skills to survive seven years in the delta quadrant without any help from starfleet. one ship with a limited number of crewmembers and still she managed to get them home more or less in one piece.

(avery brooks on the other hand has to be the best actor in ST)

It wasn't skill. Voyager had a "God" mode. It was indestructable. Even if it got destroyed, there was always a temporal anaomaly to undestroy it. :p

I believe they were aided by those Time Traveling Starfleet Officers as well.

Capt. Jean Luc Picard

not much else i can say, he's Capt, Picard. I remember watching a interview from a director of a moive in which Patrick Stewert was in, and the director said the first time i saw Stewart i was just amazed, it was Capt Picard in the flesh. thats how i would feel if i met him in real life. I enjoy the next generation the most out of the series.

I can agree with that. Capt. Jean Luc Picard was a great captain in the Star Trek world. I would also say that another captain thats up there in the list in my opinion is Capt. Benjamin Sisko. Not much else can be said for Sisko, afterall he was the Emisarry to Bajor, He was instrumental in defeating the Dominion in the war, and he's just one of the best captains that I've seen in Star Trek.

you cant forget all of those wonderful random anamolies they ran into... my favorite one was when the stole a Borg temporal transciever to stop Voyager from going into slipstream... as if the Borg wouldnt use one of those to alert the past about future threats and technology?

but, a perfect example would be Year of Hell... she went a little nuts there, but she was a pretty damn strong Captain... Sisko's time to shine would be Sacrifice of the Angels, when he went into the wormhole on a suicide mission... Picard's would be when he went over to stop Shinzon...

YoH was my favorite episode. I reall enjoyed Seeing a Star Trek ship get pushed to its limits before being destroyed. Something about it seemed more Real than Nemisis.

So much physical damage, Voyager looked like it had been through the entire dominion war, by itself.
