EF1 freezes

I'm running Eleite Force 1 with the 1.2 patch, on Win2000 SP2, with a GeForce 2 32mb video card, and onboard sound, on an Athlon 1200. Running the first mission, and everything is great. Then, at apparently random times, the computer will freeze, and start emitting a single tone. Hard rebooting is the only option.

When running the Holodeck single player mode, the computer will randomly freeze, but without the tone.

This is all extremely annoying; any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
