Default modelling frustration

Hello all. Well im not THAT great at 3d modeling but through trial and error I learned enough to be dangerous lol

There was a ship I wanted to edit just a bit so I brought the .nif file in milkshape... and saved it to a .3ds file. I used 3DS Max to inport that .3ds file and edit it the way I wanted...

I then save it back to the .3ds file... and use milkshape to export it back to a .nif file.

UNFORTUNATLY every time new problems pop up. The ship isnt textured... so I fix that... then its "dimpled" because teh smooth shader messed up... then teh glow effects are gone...

its enough to drive me mad! lol So if any of you good modelers out there could spare a min... Id be very greatful. I just want to get this DONE expecialy before my milkshape trial runs out. (I already bought 3ds Max... I dont feel liek spending MORE money... lol ).

anyways thank you for your time.

First of all, always try to use the same program to edit a file
Exporting formats between programs can cause a little losing of model quality, so it's better to use milkshape to edit the ships.
If you are near the end of your license, use google to find it's crack, I don't remember the web adress.
And if you can't see the glows, use Paint Shop Pro, Adobe Photoshop, or Corel Photo-Paint to create an alpha channel in the textures. That will make them "glow"

easy: texture in milkshape -> RTFM, not that I did but texturing is very easy, select objects that have the sae texture (maybe merging it into 1 object in 3d max?) and then in mikshape when selected goto the texture tab, make a new material, and then u can click on 2 "none" buttons, the first is is for texture for sure, click on the "none" and select your texture, maybe it's handy to haev it all in a folder in ur bc already further I dunno about bc, but I think i answered ur question

to boldly go where no-one has gone b4, well lets turn left this time...

sorry took me a while to get back to this... iv been (and am still on) vacation. .

anyways after playing aroiund i sorted my texturing problem. Turns out the names were being truncated with one of the exporations

as for the dimple effect... no luck

in fact I inport the .nif file in milkshape and imidiently re export it back to an .nif... and THERES DIMPLES. i tried with both smo0oth shading enabled and disabled

ppl use milkshape alot so this must be a stupid easy thing im just doing wrong

thanks for any help
