He would have import the sod into an editor and change the ambient/specular/diffusive/emissive settings.

Ah - correct me if I'm wrong, but if you know what you're doing, can't you also do that in a hex editor or some such?

Yes you can but one wrong edit and you'll screw the SOD totally.
