I need some help to a question?? on modding

is it ok to use game files in the game and just modifiy them to do something they would not be able to do otherwise, rather then going through process of making a new ship design, for example " Federation Orbital Prcessor " .odf give it some weapons or cloaking device just make it better or change the scout to an unmanned probe that kind of thing. maybe its just nonsense but i had to ask is that a real issue???

That's probably how people start modding. No one gets started by creating a full conversion from scratch.

As long as only take credit for the work you have done, you will be ok, so if you change the orbital processor odf, just take credit for that, not the whole model (sod, texture etc), if you plan on releasing it.

I think a typical progression would be

1) modding the object definition files (odf modding).
2) Making simple kit bashes (taking bits and pieces of stock models and putting them together to make something new).
3) Making a new model from scratch.
4) Learning how to make the textures for the model.
