icon_question Texturing technique question

Hey there, I was wondering if anyone had ever textured a model by the orientation of their faces? Like having an outline of a ship side view in photoshop then creating the texture around that, then only selecting the faces that face sidewards and sticking the texture to them?

It's just that my BFG ships look rather plain to me, and they're quite 'blocky' as in made out of cuboids and the such like.

So in the end you'd have to have a front, back, top, bottom, and left and right sides for a texture. I was jus wondering if it could be done (if you understand lol), thanks.

Do you mean like... some sort of orthographic set of photos which is then mapped to the model, something like THIS?

The best way i know to texture parts is the following:

1. creae an empty 512x512pxl texture (or what size you want)
2. select the faces you wish to texture
3. click "remap" while you are in the texture coordiante editor, and be sure you have selected the right perspective (e.g. "right" if your face is orientated to the right side)
4. scale the coordinates and then take a screenshot with pressing "Print"
5. paste it into photoshop and crop your 512x512pxl texture
6. when you reapply this to your model, youll see that the wireframe on your texture fits perfect to your mesh

Do that with all faces which have their own orientation

I think I got you, I cut my ships up by perspective and textures for each angle. here is an example from one of my metathran ships...

I make it by taking a screen shot of my ship showing ever angles.
Spoiler:

then I paste in a hull patern as the layer above it, reduce the opacity to 50% and paint on it.
Spoiler:

I then save it and uv map like that so I can see the edges. then set the opacity to 100% and save.
Spoiler:

I think that's what you were talking about?
