Creating a new odf

I need to make a brand new odf file for a ship that didn't come with an odf file. I tried copying an odf file and editing that, but when i tried to build it in the game, it didn't work. I put in a build button, the tech files, and put it in a station, but it didn't work. Please help because every time I want to put in a new ship with no odf file, I have to overwrite another ship and I am kind of limited on to what i can replace unless i start downloading ships i don't like and replacing their odf files with the ones that don't have them. But there has to be a better way. Please help.
