A playoff system may be a good idea, but how would it work unless you only consider letting the top 25 teams compete for the BCS title?

Honestly, though, it college basketball has a playoff system based on the 25 from certain areas, then it could work.

I think the first hurdle against a playoff system in the conference system that is in place, though it's only a minor hurdle. Also, a playoff system means more games. But I would support it if it was plausible.

One idea is to let the top few from each conference compete for spots in the NCAA playoffs and go from there. That defeats the purpose of ranking since there are a ton of conferences and some of them have generally crappy teams.

Not really. I would think for football it would likely end up being a 24-team tournament, similar to what Division II does. If that was the case, then you'd have automatic bids for each Division I FBS conference (there are 12) and then at-large berths. The at-large berths, similar to the NCAA basketball tournament, would likely be selected by a committee, based on a number of factors. In the basketball tournament, the basis for many of the at-large berths is the RPI, which computes win percentage, strength of schedule, and opponents strength of schedule. I would imagine they would need to devise something similar for football, which would make the ranking system very important, because that's what they'd use to build the tournament matchups. Seeding and balancing a tournament correctly is extremely crucial.
