That's the point. They *will* see through it, and that will strongly color their reaction. Instead of just saying "oh your poor friend", they'll be thinking about how I'm planning to come out, and respond accordingly. Making it transparent will let me get a more accurate idea of their reaction, while maintaining the ability to deny everything.

They of course won't believe that denial, but they won't be able to act on it in the same way they would be able to act on me explicitly coming out.
