American democracy is DEAD on a federal scale; but it still exists on state level, and that's what matters most. Large corporations are having a more difficult time taking over the individual states, I don't know why, but they're meeting more resistance than their money can deal with. If more people would speak to their state representatives, and actually band together, they could probably put forward an amendment or two about how "corporations being people" and "money in politics" is not just, and is literal corruption - that is the only thing above the Supreme Court, who are also corporate owned. It's not hard. 99% of the populace can beat 1% of the populace, regardless of financial status. If you're not going to do anything, fine, just don't move to another country, because if you're not willing to fight for whatever future you could have, then you wouldn't be willing to fight for whatever kind of future I may have. tl;dr? The power resides in the people, they just have to stop being lazy assholes. |
Re: Coming out to parents on April Fools day I have devised a 3-step program 1) Illicit a "we're supportive of you" response to an email 2) "Complain" about a friend who has unsupportive parents, who aren't cool with them coming out 3) If they reaffirm their "supportiveness", come out. If they trash my friend, don't. I asked the friend's consent of course to sharing their story. Step 2 of course will make them suspicious, which should make their response more accurate, I hope, since they'll be thinking that I might be thinking of coming out. There's no risk until step 3, at which point I should have a very firm idea of their response. Pls call me out if there is a flaw in this plan. I've already sent the step 1 email and am awaiting a response. |
Re: Coming out to parents on April Fools day PS: Wouldn't it be hilarious if they saw my username over my shoulder once and are watching this thread right now? |
Re: Coming out to parents on April Fools day Wouldn't it be really funny if your parents were actually members of this forum? |
Re: Coming out to parents on April Fools day That would be incredibly disturbing. You're all a bunch of weirdos :D |
Re: Coming out to parents on April Fools day So are you, Toph. But we love you! *hugs* |

There is a big chance that your parents will get suspicious or even see through it right away. If they do it kinda gives them the moral high and a chance to take the initiative: they might think "he is sneaky about it, that is enough justification for me to draw a red line now before he made any irrevocable statements and tell him he is in big trouble if he 'decides' to be gay rather than to snap out of it". They might take your attempt at testing the waters about their attitude as a sign that you are unsure of your sexual orientation and checking with them whether it is ok to experiment. |
Re: Coming out to parents on April Fools day You have a point. I'm hoping that if they do take it that way, I'll be able to show them that in fact, they're the last people I've told - everyone else has known for years. Actually that's part of why I'm mostly okay with telling them now - I'm completely and absolutely secure in it, so if they do something like that, I'll be able to withstand it. This of course has its own problems. I imagine they'll feel rather bad that I didn't trust them. That will be especially true if they prove to be accepting, as I'll have hurt their feelings despite their acceptance. So either way, some one's going to get hurt in this, which sucks, but is sadly unavoidable at this point. |
Re: Coming out to parents on April Fools day Toph... I am your father! You're grounded. |
