I was wondering what the average person talks about since I really have no clue. Besides the occasional " Yes, please" and "Thank you", it's been about eight years since I've done any of it. Since I doubt once I graduate I'll be able to land a job with the social skills of a sixth grader, what should I be focusing on?

Also, how does one go about meeting people? My professors always seem to be talking about how great college is because you can "meet" new people, but I'm not really sure how I go about doing that. I remember something during orientation a couple of years ago about finding people with common interests, but I don't really have any. Nor would I even know how to go about finding those other people.

Mm. Well, I think that the way people meet can vary, not just because of the circumstances but also because of the people themselves, I myself am a very quiet person - I barely talk at all, unless I'm with friends, therefore, I really have no clue how I have the friends in the first place, I can't even understand how such a quiet person could have possibly gained such love and trust from people.
I found that just being myself seemed to work somehow, and I've ended up knowing pretty well the entire 10th grade aswell as some grade 12's and 13's.

As for conversing, I guess good listening skills are in order, and you'd need to think about what you'd say as a response to so that you wouldn't say the wrong thing... But then again, I guess it really does just come down to who you are, there's bound to be people out there for you to meet.

Just follow these steps:
1. Go to a bar.
2. Get a bunch of alcohol.
3. Get very drunk.
4. Start talking to everyone.
5. Talk sports or something with some guys.
6. Start a bromance.

I can't help you out with how to talk to people (I myself could use help on that). But as far as meeting people, I think that no matter how shy someone is, everyone, with time, becomes more comfortable with people that are consistently around them. Of course, the time it takes to become comfortable with different people varies.

I don't think it's so much a matter of who you are and what you and your peers have in common, but where you are and the seemingly random group of people you find yourself surrounded by. With time, I believe that just about anybody can build a friendship with one another.

Just get out there and present yourself.
