Generally people talk about boring bullshit (kids, house, wife, cars, things, etc...). Frankly, I don't understand the fuss about smalltalk and schmoozing.

No offense, but that is sad. Just do random shenanigans, that'll get you talking to people. Shenanigans are a great way to get out there. Here's a few shenanigans options: 1) Get really drunk and go swimming, 2) Go to a party and start dancing with random chicks, and 3) commit minor civil offenses (my personal favorite).

I'm done with "shenanigans". The two times last year I tried to have some clean fun and potentially meet people I got in trouble with the police. Even if I wanted to drink, I'm not 21 yet.

I have all morning classes while he is asleep. For most of the afternoon he's either at the gym or dinner with his girlfriend. In the evening he plays WoW. I can't think of any good conversation topics, I'm a chemistry major and he's a business major.

Life, you have life in common.

LET ME EXPAND. Talk about your day, something you saw happen, something you did, something interesting you heard, hobbies, plans, goals, etc. Starting a conversation is the hardest part the rest just kinda comes.

Sorry, that wasn't really good advice, I just wanted to say shenanigans.

Vulcans do not make smalltalk.

Wait! You're not IKS. Wooops! My apologies, Ensign. Here, have a hug:

Seriously now. Besides being quiet, are you also shy? You and your roommate have nothing in common. What about other people around you? There's gotta be someone you have something in common besides people who attend same classes as you. You can have fun with other people without getting in trouble with the police and/or drinking. I never got in trouble with the law and I never got drunk. That doesn't mean I didn't have fun with other people. You like Star Trek, right? Don't tell me there are no other Trekkies at your college! ;)

You know what you and my grandfather will have in common in 3 hours? Death.

You better not make me run.

Also, how does one go about meeting people? My professors always seem to be talking about how great college is because you can "meet" new people, but I'm not really sure how I go about doing that. I remember something during orientation a couple of years ago about finding people with common interests, but I don't really have any. Nor would I even know how to go about finding those other people.

All of the friends I hang out with now had their origins in the pub. As I didn't know them before I met them there, I assume that's where they were grown.

Basically the best thing to do is find your local bar, determine if it's a decent place or not (i.e. make sure there aren't many people walking out of the toilets with white powder on their noses), and once you know, drink so much that you can't talk. It's called a social lubricant for a reason, just don't take that phrase literally - apparently it burns.
