For that, I think your best friend is the layer dialog box.

It's under "Dialogs" in the picture's toolbars. Ctrl+L also does it.

The thing is that the text you typed in is considered a layer in GIMP. All you do is select another layer in the layer dialog box and it should fully deselect the text (layer).
