woah, I got the shivers looking at that picture invictus (saw in on you xfire actually, went through your campaign-documentation of the byzantiums).

½ year since I last played it, but I remember that the vaurangian guards are superior to any infantry (almost any cavalry as well)

Yes Rome is probably the best of all the total war games, but medieval 2 can be magic sometimes. the only thing I find negative about Rome is that after a while, when you've got the last units of your faction. then I can't really finish the whole campaign since I grow tired of just the same units all the time

and the wait for empire is killing me! yesterday I got Hearts of Iron 2 (tip from meadow), and it's a bit of fun, but it reminds me of empire when we have the whole world for us to conquer!

Yes empire will kill me also. I want to see the massive campaign map, but also alot more provinces and citys to take. Villages too.

I just got done barely surviving a war with Macedon. Those damn phalanx's just march right through Principes. I came out with 120 men left, went in with about 2000. And im also near the end of a prolonged war with Gaul, problem is my border is defended by a bunch of loosely knit forts, guarded by town watch. I don't see it holding up against another onslaught of Gaulish people. Plus the germans just invaded from the north, and their massive Spear Warbands are just as bad as phalanx's.

Carthage's navy has cut off my trade with Egypt, and those god damned Britons who supposedly are my allies conjur no help at all. At least Macedon has been wiped from the board. One less Phalanx army to worry about, now all thats left is Greece, and the Carthiginian Elephants. Ah the glory of rome. LONG LIVE THE SENATE!

Though I have to admit, playing the SPQR is alot more fun than the Julii Scipii or Brutii, cause I can destroy them, reclaim rome to myself, and have access to far more powerful troops. Thank you god for easily editable game files

Customized my unit flags too, my SPQR flags are now the real flags of Emperor Constantine, (Kind of late era for RTW) but cool none the less . Romes 13th Emperor marches on hundreds of years before he exsisted!

Also made the start date 5000 B.C. and the End date 9999 A.D. Plenty of time for me.

I guess sgt-d won the sandwich war with that picture.

archmage: Empire total war (google it)

archimonde: sounds awesome! however, greece have some phalanxes that are not to be trifled with either, spartan hoplites for example.

I haven't tried to play with the senate for a longer time, just for a couple of rounds. maybe I should try it.

also, a good tactic for taking out phalanxes (apart from missile units, I know this is obvious but anyway), lure them to the open with some infantry, then quickly flank them with some cavalry and to repeated carges against their flank or rear.

Yes the lack of units makes Rome sometimes boring thats the reason I bought Medieval 2 and it's expansion Kingdoms. I really enjoyed the campaign with the Byzantiums, I think it's because I love the factions units', swords and axes with brutal cataphracts are just the army I need.
And Archimonde, never, never use Town Watch, even peasants fight better, atleast they last longer. By the way those Town Watch look way to powerful.
Empire Total War is going to kick ass, yes. But it's not really my era.. Way to much gunpowder, thats also what I dislike about the late period in Medieval. It's just gunpowder versus gunpowder. I enjoy the massive infantry and cavalry tactics. Melee forever!
Oh and who is with me when I say, I hope the Total War after Empire is going to be Rome II Total War?

Rome 2 yes. Though I'd need alot more units, a bigger campaign map (Basically the map they have now, seperated into smaller provinces with more citys and villages to attack. And actual naval combat.

yeah so do I, got the realism mod about 2-3 weeks ago. however, seems that the lack of units is even greater in the realism mod. (haven't come very far yet)

I know exactly what you mean, I'm not very fond of gunpowder fights either, I prefer melee. However, I read in a FAQ about empire that the soldiers (musketeers) will only (and only did IRL) fire one round at their targets, then charging with their bayonets. = missile and melee combat, just like rome total wars hastati, principes etc.

yes rome total war 2 would be great, but at the same time, I think they should try something new then as well. not sure what though, they have covered a lot of different eras in their games.
They should never go even further in time than what they're doing in empire, it would ruin the game.
wait a minute... what if there won't be another total war game after empire?

Wow, Empire seems really nice, better graphics, naval battles, and a more realistic campaign map.

That still seems to destroy my cavalry, I find you have to make them run round lots first.
