There was a sign?
If you meant the one written in swedish, I always thought that meant something along the lines of "welcome, please do not hesitate to light matches if lost in the dark"

You misread it. It actually reads: "Welcome, lit matches may cause Hiroshima-like situation.

No one seemed to take notice of the fact that if it was dark he couldn't have possibly read the sign that told him to light a match.
