its actually a kind of rule...it is "don't ask to be a mod"

Wait until it's offered or someone asks to recommend you.
Even then no guarantees.

Perhaps the more important question is why someone should want it enough to attempt to seek it out in the first place.

The usual, follow the rules, be active, be mature and don't ask for modship (which could be extended to begging).
