PS3 Browser SLOW

Just recently bought the new PS3 Slim and loving it, but I have one problem. The internet browser is extremely slow. I'm guessing that this is normal but I was just wondering, maybe it's just mine? I read somewhere that Sony said it is faster than IE 7...which it is no where near. It's almost impossible to play a simple flash game it's so laggy and it takes forever to load a page (ie Youtube)..any ideas to make it faster? I want to be able to use it exactly the way I do on my computer.

The internet browser is full of suck and fail. I remember when YouTube XL used to make my PS3 crash whenever I exited the browser, or tried to, at least.

It doesn't seem to handle Flash very well, and whatever it can handle is usually played with epic lag, or jumps. Sony have said a lot of things, such as we will be able to play music in game in the next update, which was 2 years ago. We can't (except for Wipeout, and games that specifically support it). Also, IE7 is incredibly slow, my PSP internet is faster!

No sweat, it's not your machine. Just Sony's terrible programming.

Well damn, that's a real bummer expecially now that I'm having major computer problems it looks like it's my only option.

Sony didn't want to go through the legal process of using someone else's web browser, so they developed their own browser in-house. That's why it sucks.

If you want a better browser, you should probably just install Ubuntu as your PS3's secondary OS and use something like Firefox or Chrome.

Do you know anyone who has done this before? Does it actually work and what are the problems that can occur?

I'm currently trying to do it now. Worst thing that can happen is that the backup doesn't work and you lose just about everything. Make sure you sync your trophy data to the server- I mean hey, at least you'll keep your trophies.

In order for it to work, you need to have the version of Ubuntu specifically designed for the PlayStation 3. It won't work if you have regular Ubuntu- the PS3 won't even recognize the executable.

Then you install it. You must have a keyboard for this or it won't work. Select the video mode you are using (if you use 1080p, then select 1080p). The screen will turn black and you just wait a while for it to do whatever it needs to do.

And that's as far as I've gotten so far. My dad was helping me install it, and well, he's sort of lost his touch with computers, and he told me that it probably wasn't working if it was black for so long. I'm going to try installing Ubuntu again next time I see him.

But anyway, after you install, if you don't want to go to Ubuntu then you need to just keep holding down the PS3's power button until you're brought to the XMB. After you do that, you will probably be taken straight to the XMB every time you startup unless you... well I'm not sure to be honest.

And last thing, I think that Ubuntu for the PS3 lets you set it up so that you can navigate with the PS3's Sixaxis.

Those instructions were kinda scary. Haha, no offense meant but I'd be iffy on following instructions like that. XD I'll wait until you get to do it successfully or mess up your PS3 before I give that a shot. X3 But yeah, the PS3 browser blows. But then again, that's why I have a computer in addition to the PS3. So I do all my prawn on it. LOL

Wow, you must have a different Sony PS3 than me, Maybe sony made mine special, because I don't get any stuttering or crashing from using the internet on it.

Infact only reason I don't use it unless I'm smoking pot and watching stupid videos on youtube with friends is because I don't have a proper place to set down a mouse pad for my wireless mouse in the room I have a ps3 in. I'm not saying it's a perfect browser because Firefox is alot better, but it's in no way as bad as you make it sound.

Note, OP has PS3 Slim, you can not install other OS on slim model.
