try jolt or when you enter a server it should say or normally says who its off or check the servers list for names and do some research

what is the point of paying for a server the only reason i can c is that u have a crappy connection and you want to host lots of people yeah jolt is a good one lots of em on sof

Umm, the point is so people can play without lag. Unless you have a T3 or higher in your room.

It cracks me up when newbies make servers from their cable boxes in their room hehehe.

beef flaps i have hosted many a time and have had up to 30 or so people in my server without the least bit of lag and im running a regular old cable modem, there are alot of servers out there like this to that do not pay a fee for a good connecion

30 people on a cable modem? come on man, I did not play my first video game yesterday.
You are not going to sit there and tell me with a straight face you hosted a 30 man server from your room with a cable box, and had a lag free game.
I do not buy it.
Please post your upload speed please. I would love to see it.
What did you cap the players rate at?
I have been on many cable hosted servers and the lag is just horrid.
Cable is good for 8 or 10 MAX, and even then it is laggy with a lot of action.

well it wasnt lag free there were occasional spikes but not bad enuf not to be able to play through i dunno y but my router for some reason is able to amplify by speeds so i host on one comp and play on the other also keep in mind that the only thing on the hosting comp is sof nothing else

I don't know about the amplified speeds, but post your upload speed for me please.

Renting a gameserver is a great thing. They are on fast OC pipes and dedicated machines. Your players will usually have zero lag and can up their rate to the max.
There are many many advantages of renting a server over setting one up in your room.
Besides, the prices are pretty reasonable these days.

and what does cable OC mean? thanks for the link man, i dont really host that often i just run a tutorial server when a new map comes out i allow up to 30 ppl including myself and everyone spectates me (i find it easier that way people can c what i c and nobody gets left behind with 30 ppl its like teaching class) and i show all the secrets on the map including ways to get on roof, teleporters, and so forth this might be the reason that i had only occasional lag spikes because nobody was playing except myself and everyone was spectating

4-6 players would be about right for cable, and it would still be a little laggy.
My clan has a dedicated server for 16 people tops, never 30. Only Eartquake can have 36 at the time, and I bet you a month's salary they don't do it on a cable connection.

4-6?!?!!?!? now i have had at least 10 people PLAYING no speccing with no lag, just courious fragger just how large is one of your months salaries, and i dunno wat irc means but if it means showing ppl stuff then that is what i do

When I said OC, I was referring to an OC48 and such.
Look up OC48 on google ;)
I am on a T1 right now and got 3538 kbps upload speed.
I wish I could run a server from here ;) but I won't risk getting fired :)

I would keep the player limit to 8 or 10 MAX on your cable server, and cap the rate at maybe 3000 so everyone can play without much lag.
There are others here a lot more experienced with setting up servers that can help you further.
I will be renting a server from that place I posted soon, I will let you guys know the IP when it is all done :)
It will be a 24 man server most likely, maybe higher.


BTW: Bob, your download speed seems slow for cable?? Have you applied any tweaks ?
I average 500kbs download from fast sites on my home cable connection, sometimes as fast as 1MB :)
